of the new morality. But neither man could have known how Selena’s own marriage to a
handsome, charming, quite brilliant artist named Cale Masters had crumbled because of „the other woman,“
a lovely young art student who truly „understood“ Cale’s temperamental nature. She thought of being made
to play the role she despised so completely had infuriated Selena beyond even York’s best estimates.
Selena had empathized immediately with the unknown Mrs. Anderson.
York must have quickly sensed the potential of the force he had unleashed, however, because he hadn’t
hung around after dropping the bombshell. The near-green gaze had assessed the glittering fury in the eyes
of his victim as she sat unnaturally still on the couch. Then he’d calmly taken a last sip of the expensive
wine, risen lithely to his feet, and headed for the door with the satisfied air of a man who has set wheels in
motion and who knows he need only wait until the inevitable has occurred.
Selena had called Richard the minute she’d slammed the door behind York.
„How did you dare?“ she’d raged when he’d uncomfortably begun to admit the truth. „Who the hell do
you think you are to do this to me? I will not be the other woman in any man’s life! I will not allow you to
use me in order to cheat on your wife. What made you think you could get away with it, Richard?“
Clearly taken aback by what he considered Selena’s overreaction to the situation, Richard had tried to
placate her, realizing too late that everything he said only got him in deeper and deeper.
„For God’s sake, Selena, calm down!“ he’d finally muttered desperately. „Elaine and I haven’t even
lived together for over a year…!“
„Are you telling me you’re divorced?“ she’d cut in challengingly.
    „Well, no, not exactly…“
    „Yes or no?“
„Selena, you have to understand,“ he’d pleaded. „There are reasons why a divorce isn’t a…a solution at
    this point.“
„Believe me, I’m not asking you to get one! I have no wish to be the reason you make the decision to
leave your wife!“ she’d retorted fiercely.
„Darling, I’d have left her months ago if it were possible,“ he’d nearly wailed. „You’ve got to listen to
me, Selena. I don’t know how you found out, but the reason I never told you about Elaine is because she
simply isn’t important to us! Compared to what you and I were finding together…“
„We’ve found nothing together! And furthermore, don’t ever let me find you anywhere near me again!“
There had been more in the same vein before Selena had finally tossed the receiver back into its cradle
with thoroughly disgusted violence. When she’d lifted it again, it was to call John and Louise Fletcher.
Neither had questioned her abrupt decision to make use of the ski resort condominium. They had been
delighted to have her accept the invitation and had arranged at once to give her the key and directions. The
next day, still simmering with the force of her anger, Selena had caught a plane to Salt Lake City.
Now here she was, stepping inside the luxurious vacation apartment, underdressed for the weather and
not the least bit interested in learning how to ski. She glanced around at her surroundings with mild curiosity.
It was a one-bedroom arrangement, a bit on the small side, but beautifully furnished if you liked the
standard subtle-toned modern look. There wasn’t much personality to the place, she decided critically as
she took in the light beige carpet, beige drapes, and the earth tones of the furniture. Only to be expected in
a resort condominium that served a number of owners, she supposed as she tossed her purse down onto a
light brown chair and walked over to the window.
There was no criticizing the view, however. Acres of snow-covered landscape stretched before her.
From the vantage point of the second-floor unit she could watch the brightly dressed skiers whizzing down
    the
