what brings you to Treecrest?â asked Annie.
âWe have heard that the princess of Treecrest is finally free of her curse,â Puss hurried to say. âAs the most beautiful princess in the world, she will make the ideal bride for the Marquis.â
âWeâre on our way there so I can win her heart,â said the young man.
Annie struggled not to laugh. âIâve heard that sheâs already taken.â
âReally?â squeaked the Marquis, making Annie wonder just how old he was if his voice was still changing.
âAbout Carabasâ¦,â Liam began.
âIt is time for us to go,â the cat said to the young man.
âIt was nice meeting you,â the Marquis told Annie and Liam.
âNow!â said the cat as he jumped off his chair.
Rose Red appeared in the door, carrying two steaming bowls of stew, and had to step aside as the young man and his cat hurried past. âIâm glad I had them pay before I brought their supper,â she said, setting the bowls on Annie and Liamâs table. âThat cat looked shifty to me. So, are you staying for a while or are you waiting for the next trip across on the ferry?â she asked Liam, still acting as if Annie werenât there.
âActually,â said Liam, âwe came to talk to you. Or at least a friend of ours did. You do remember Beldegard, donât you?â
âBeldegard?â she said, looking puzzled. âI donât know any man by that name.â
âHe isnât a man exactly,â Annie said. âHeâs a bear who used to be a man. A prince really, but then you probably know that.â
Rose Redâs eyes widened. âI know he used to say he was a prince, but he really is? Ah, well, thatâs neither here nor there. What good is he if heâs still just a bear?â
âWeâre on a quest to get him turned back,â Liam told her. âIf all goes well, he wonât be a bear for much longer.â
âAnd heâs here, you say?â said Rose Red with a spark in her eye.
Liam nodded. âWeâll take you to him as soon as you bring us that cooked fish and bread we asked for. Heâs hungry, too.â
âIâll be right back,â said Rose Red, and hurried from the room.
âI think sheâs eager to see him,â Liam said.
âIndeed,â replied Annie. âNow that she knows he really is a prince and has a chance of becoming a man again. Weâd better eat fast. I donât think sheâll want to wait for us to finish.â
âBeldegard!â Rose Red exclaimed as if he were the most important person in the world. With a cry of delight, she ran to the bear and hugged him, shoving Gwendolyn out of the way.
âPardon me!â said the princess, but Rose Red kept hugging the bear prince, who didnât seem to mind.
âI wish youâd greet me like that,â Liam whispered to Annie.
âGet turned into a bear and I will,â she murmured back.
âBeldegard!â Gwendolyn wailed when it looked as if Rose Red would never let go.
The bear prince grunted. âUh, youâre making it hard for me to breathe,â he told Rose Red, who dropped her arms and stepped aside to look at him.
âIâm so glad you came to see me, Beldy,â she told him. âIâve missed you so much. Why did you ever leave me?â
âBeldy?â said Gwendolyn. âShe actually calls you that?â
Beldegard sat up a little straighter. âYou got a boyfriend, remember?â
âBut Yardley ran off without a word!â Rose Red cried. âCan you imagine? And after he was gone I realized how much I loved you and I didnât know how to find you.â
âHeâs been busy,â Gwendolyn snapped at her. âTell her why weâre here,â she said to Beldegard.
âOh, right. Weâre looking for the dwarf who turned me into a bear. You remember, I told you
