all about him.â Beldegard sighed when Rose Red gave him a blank look. âShort man, long white beard, leaf footprints, voice like a choked frogâ¦â
âSorry, Iâve never seen anyone like that,â Rose Red said, shaking her head.
Thunder rumbled in the distance. Annie looked up to see dark clouds scudding overhead. âYour mother said you told her that someone came to the tavern asking about him,â said Annie, turning back to Rose Red.
âOh,
that
dwarf! Just a few days ago an old dwarf came in looking for his brother. He said there was afamily emergency and his brother needed to come home. It had something to do with their grandfather being sick.â
Annie turned her head when she heard someone whistling. A stable boy strode around the back of the building. He glanced at the group of people, stopping suddenly when he saw the bear. Turning on his heel, the boy ran back around the stable.
âI think I should go now,â said Beldegard. âPeople around here are more likely to hunt bears than talk to them.â
âDid the old dwarf mention where he came from?â Liam asked Rose Red.
âIâm not sure,â she said, looking thoughtful. âHe did say that he had come a long way. Oh, wait! I remember now! He said he was from the Dark Woods. Yes, that was it, Iâm sure of it.â
âThere it is!â shouted the stable boy to the group of men following him. âSeeâit isnât on a chain. Itâs a wild bear, just like I told you!â
âI have to go!â said Beldegard. âWe need to cross the river. Take the first ferry across and Iâll meet you on the other side.â
âBut Beldegard!â Gwendolyn cried as the bear prince loped off.
âDonât forget me, Beldy!â cried Rose Red. âYou know I always liked you better than I liked anyone else!â
âOut of the way!â a rough-looking man shouted atAnnie and the others as the mob armed with pitchforks and grappling hooks tore after the bear prince.
âI hope heâll be all right!â Gwendolyn wailed, wringing her hands.
âHeâll be fine,â said Annie. âHeâs as smart as a human and as strong as a bear. Iâm sure heâll figure something out.â
Chapter 6
When tears pooled in gwendolynâs eyes, Annie patted her on her back. After years of being told to keep her distance from her parents and sister, she still wasnât comfortable touching them. âDonât worry,â she said. âYouâll see Beldegard again in a little while.â
âNo, she wonât,â said Rose Red, brushing the loose bear fur off her gown. âThat was the last ferry for the day. The next one wonât be leaving until morning.â
âIn that case I should look for a place we can spend the night,â said Liam. âDo you know where we can find a room?â he asked Rose Red.
She nodded and pointed at the tavern. âThere are a couple of rooms upstairs, but they go fast. People spend the night so they can board the first ferry in the morning.â
âIâll see what I can get,â said Liam. âWait here, ladies. Iâll be right back.â
As Liam hurried off, Rose Red eyed Gwendolyn. âSo, you think youâre in love with the bear?â she asked, flipping her hair over her shoulder.
âI
am
in love with him. Heâs my one true love!â
âYeah, right. And Iâm a royal princess.â
âIâll have you know that I
am
ââ
âNot going to wait here any longer,â interrupted Annie. âCome on, Gwennie.â
âSo why are you two wearing boysâ clothes?â Rose Red said as she followed them to the tavern. âItâs pretty obvious that youâre girlsâespecially you,â she said, looking Gwendolyn up and down.
âWe⦠fell in the river and our clothes were ruined,â Annie hurried
