exasperated. Even Haley knew Shaun well enough by now to know that âEiggib onâ was backwards for âNo biggie.â Shaunliked to talk backwards occasionally. It was one of his quirks. âDarcy never comes out and says she wants to be with Devon. Sheâs always got some phony reason she has to be near him. Itâs totally manipulative. And itâs working. Devonâs at the point now that whenever we ask him to do something his first response is âSure, Iâll see if Darcy can come.â And you think I like hanging out with that little pervy twerp?â
âThis is worse than I thought.â Haley put down her sandwich. Sheâd been feeling kind of territorial toward Devon in the past few days, thinking she should be the one cooing over veggie dumplings with him, not Darcy Podowski. But sheâd always figured that sooner or later, heâd get tired of Darcyâs tricks and come to his senses. Lately, though, it was abundantly clear that Darcy was actually getting to Devon; she was a real threat, and it was time for Haley to quit fooling around and step up to the challenge.
âTake my advice, Haley,â Irene said. âMake an effort here, or youâll lose Devon to Darcy for good. And nobody wants to see that happen. Certainly not me and Shaun.â
âSpeak for yourself, woman. I dig the pervy twerp.â Irene punched him in the shoulder. âOkay, fine, you want to worm your way into their little mud hut and cool down whateverâs been heating up between âem, I get it.â Haley and Irene stared atShaun, surprised. âWhat? I listen, I pay attention. I can scheme with the best of them. I happen to think itâs a huge waste of milliseconds, but â¦â
âShaun the love guru,â Irene said.
âNo, no, maybe heâs right,â Haley said. âYou know, keep your friends close, and keep your enemiesââ
âOn a choke leash chained to the garage,â Shaun interrupted. âThatâs right.â
âYou arenât seriously thinking of listening to him, are you?â Irene asked.
âWhat else am I supposed to do? Devon and Darcy are probably doing it as we speak.â
âIf thatâs the case, they got one interesting mating dance,â Shaun said. âTheyâre coming this way. Ti tânsi, ecnedicnioc ynnuf a sâtaht?â
âItâs a small town, Shaun,â Haley said.
âToo small,â Irene added.
Devon and Darcy strolled into the diner and waved at Irene, Shaun and Haley. Devon started toward them to say hello, but Darcy grabbed his sleeve and said, âQuick! A booth just opened up!â and dragged him away.
âSee what I mean?â Irene said.
âThat was cold,â Shaun said. âLet a guy say yoyo to his friends, at least, before you give him the catâs cradle.â
Haley finished her sandwich, trying not to glancein Devonâs direction. But she didnât need to lookâShaun was happy to give her the play-by-play.
âDevon started to sit down across from Darcy, but sheâs making him sit on the same side as her,â Shaun said. âHere comes the waitress with their water ⦠ooh! Darcyâs pulling the old âI spilled water on my T-shirtâ trick. âDevon, will you help me wipe it off?ââ Shaun put on a girly voice for Darcyâs lines, then switched to a deep boy voice. ââSure, Darcy, anything for youâ¦.ââ
âWe donât need you to do the voices, Dr. Seduction,â Irene said. âI feel like Iâm listening to a puppet show.â
âNow theyâre orderingâ¦. Darcyâs saying, âIâll have a big heaping helping of Devon! Mmm ⦠mmm ⦠good.ââ
âOkay, Shaun, thatâs enough,â Irene said. âHaley, time to make your move. Why donât you amble on over there and ask the two of them if they
