door.
âHey, Denise,â I greeted her.
âHowâs it going?â
âNot too bad.â
âGood,â Denise said, pulling out a piece of paper from a folder she was holding.
âI just wanted to drop this off to you. Itâs about the faculty meeting this Thursday.
It should be in your e-mail, but I still believe in handing out hard copies.â
âMy first faculty meeting,â I replied. âExciting.â
âIt should be,â Denise smiled.
âHey, do you mind if I speak with you outside?â I asked her.
âSure,â Denise agreed. âWell, actually, I need to finish making my rounds. Come see
me at lunch, okay?â
âOkay.â
As Denise left, students started making their way into the classroom.
I couldnât quite figure this out. I had one student who didnât talk, and then another
one telling me not to say anything to her. For this to be such a prestigious school,
these kids definitely didnât act normal.
The warning bell rang, followed by the final bell.
âAll right, everyone,â I started off. âIâm going to take attendance. Just say âhereâ
or âpresentâ when I call your name. Alicia?â
âHere,â Alicia replied.
âMiranda?â
âHere.â
âCali?â
âHere.â
âDorian.â
âPresent,â Dorian responded.
âRaven?â I called, but didnât hear a response. âRaven isnât here. Robin?â
I didnât see Robin, either. I called the rest of the studentsâ names, then asked,
âDid I miss anyone?â
Isabelle raised her hand.
âIsabelle. I missed you,â I said, looking down at the attendance sheet. âI donât
have your name here. Iâll just write it in till we fix that. All right, everyone,
today weâre going to be discussing your projects that will be due at the end of the
month.â
âA project, already?â Dorian questioned. âWe just started back.â
âYeah, well, thatâs why Iâm giving you the instructions early, so you can get started
on it,â I explained to him. âItâs going to be a brief presentation that youâre going
to show the class. This can be through a PowerPoint, handouts, whatever you think
works best. I want you all to plan on making it five to ten minutes, followed by
a brief discussion that you will lead. So I want you all to write a few discussion
questions toââ
The door slowly opened, interrupting me.
In walked the twins, Raven and Robin, late again.
âRaven and Robin,â I said. âGlad you two decided to join us. Everyone, make sure
youâre in your seats by the time the warning bell rings.â
âSorry, Mr. Ramirez,â Raven apologized.
Once again, Robin did not say anything. Cali waved for Raven, and she made her way
over to where Cali and Miranda sat. Robin looked to see if Cali was going to invite
her over, but she didnât. After a moment, Robin sat behind Isabelle.
I started passing out the instructions for the assignment. âSo, for this project
weâre going to look at The Hunger Games . Weâre going to analyze a few passages, and
then Iâll split you up into groups.â
âWait! What?â Cali interrupted. âYouâre not allowing us to choose our own groups?â
âNo, not for this project, but the next one you can,â I told her. âSo the first group
will be Alicia, Cali, and Isabelle. The second group will be Dorian, Brent, and Robin.â
âWhat!â Dorian shouted. âUmmm . . . Mr. Ramirez. I canât work in that group.â
âAnd why not?â I asked.
Dorian paused for a moment and looked around at the class. I noticed everyone looking
at him, expecting him to say something funny.
âBecause I love my life too much, and I donât want to end up missing,â Dorian finally
expressed.
