die.”
“Ma’am?” Beau choked out, hoping for some kind of clarity.
“You give my boy life for always.” She took the talisman that hung around her neck and kissed the tiny sac.
Beau opened his mouth and closed it as Lafayette leaned forward. “What are we now?”
“They call it many things. But I say zombie.”
“Zombie?” Beau had only read one book with a small reference to such a demonic thing.
“Sir, no looking like that. Death can’t touch you. A blessing and a curse, but if you love as you do now it will always be a blessing.”
    “How do we survive?”
Gran laughed. “You need each other.”
Lafayette looked at Beau for a clue, but he had none to give.
The old woman crackled. “Oh honeys. Manseed. Every day. When you are feeling tired or confused, you must have some.”
Beau knew his face was red as the flames in the fireplace as Lafayette repeated as if he needed to understand. “Manseed.”
She opened her toothless mouth and put a finger inside as if prescribing the method in which the fluid needed to be given. Beau’s hands covered his face totally mortified. But clearly in the slave quarters such things were talked about freely because Lafayette chuckled with his Gran.
“How did I get this?” Beau wanted to know. He needed to understand.
“Your family. All the men have this…” Her voice trailed off. “It is in the males of a family line, but it skips one or two generations.”
    “There’s more?” Lafayette asked.
“There be many things in this big world. We don’t know it all. I heard tales. Many places be having the zombies. You go and find them. Let them teach you.” Gran smiled. “But you go. Because your uncle he won’t have you with no slave.”
Beau’s hand tightens around Lafayette’s. “I will protect him, Ma’am.”
“I know you will. You a good boy.”
With few other details, Lafayette said good-bye to his only living relative. Beau gathered all the things he could carry that would allow them to change for money. Within an hour, they were galloping away on horses.
They rode through the day until it was dusk. The horses needed a break, so they stopped at an inn. Beau breathlessly took a room and was nervous with the implications.
Before dawn, Lafayette and Beau’s souls were entwined, as were their destinies. The overwhelming happiness saw them through the first few confusing years on their travels around the world. It eventually led them back to South Carolina.
They had papers forged proving he was the long lost kin of the Renou estate that was languishing due to abandonment. Beau wisely invested their money and soon had enough to rebuild. They lived in peaceful harmony exploring their love, which is as strong as it was the day it started.

Kai sighed as he closed the book. He had to admit it was sweet. It gave him a little bit of hope that becoming a zombie wasn’t the end of the world… just the end of the world as he knew it.

Chapter Five: Tour of Club Zombie

Jasper asked again. “Are you sure you want to see the Club?”
Want was a strong word. Kai spent most of his life trying not to want anything because it always led to disappointment. He didn’t want to see it, but there seemed to be a tingle of excitement pushing him towards the experience. “Yes. I want to see it.”
He had been on the grounds for a few weeks, and he was curious to see what Beau and Lafayette created. He might never admit it, but he enjoyed reading about their story, and this was part of them.
Kai thought about Jasper’s impotence and how he would remain unaffected by the anticipation. He, on the other hand, felt like he was daring himself out of his comfort zone with what was surely to be a blatant display of eroticism if the rumors he heard were even half true. The question he couldn’t seem to answer was why he felt the need to do so. The only justification he could find was it would help him control his runaway feelings, and bring his body
