of his breathing on my thigh as I kept him in my mouth, savoring him as he softened slightly between my lips. He rolled me off slowly, planting a final kiss on my soft mound before laying back himself, totally spent. I inhaled again, the scent of our union soft in the air. My eyes closed, just living, his hand falling into my own as we lay side by side, connected in the early dawnlight… In that moment, just breathing and touching, it was easy to push the danger out of my mind. Maybe we could get out of this alive. We could disappear, live another life, one far away from the danger and the human trafficking and the Horsemen… Far from all the evils of the world…
    Maybe…
A different scent rolled into my nose as my eyes flashed back open. Coffee! Bacon! My legs propelled me, my hands pulling the ruined shirt together to cover me as best as possible as I made my way to the kitchen.
“Long ride ahead of us… I made breakfast.”
I smiled. Famine stood wearing a pair of tight jeans, still shirtless. He worked the skillet with expert precision, tossing eggs and bacon to a pair of plates before spinning around and taking a seat across from me.
“Don’t worry baby, I took a quick ride into town for fresh ingredients.”
I laughed, thinking about the potential contents of the old unused fridge.
It was almost enough to forget that anything had happened, to pretend that it was all just a dream. I could live in this moment, just another normal morning with my normal man, having a normal breakfast. No bikers, no Kings, no dark parking lots, no baby growing inside me…
“I know you have more questions.”
The statement of fact was cold, and it broke my little fantasy. I’d been attacked in a parking lot by dangerous men. Famine was one of the Four Horsemen, a gang of bikers who worked for the government. Nothing about this was normal, and nothing ever would be again. If I was to survive, Mark was my lighthouse against the crashing waves. He knew what was going on, and I needed him to share this knowledge.
“What happens now?” I asked, hesitating.
“We drive into Vegas and wait on Conquest’s call,” Mark replied.
“Why do they want to kill us?”
Mark didn’t like the question, his face contorting. “We don’t know it was the Kings Kayla, not yet.”
The air hung in the room, thick. Mark’s eyes flashed with what looked like pain. I wondered how long he had been doing this. How long he had been saddled with the MC. It wasn’t my pain to bear, but I found a tear running down my face, my fingertip wiping it away from its perch on my cheek.
“It wasn’t always like this, you know…”
He seemed to read my mind, his eyes flashing as they stared into my own.
“Sure, we did a few bad things, but we were fair. We kept the crime out of town, the cartel from the south and the mobsters from back east. Long as we held the docks, they left San Merced alone. People appreciated that. We were heroes.”
Mark frowned, the lines on his face forming deep creases. “It took them a long time, but eventually, we gave the FBI enough rope to hang us.”
    “The FBI?” I asked inquisitively.
Mark laughed, as if he’d told a great joke. “Do you know how long I’ve wished I could trust someone with this story, Kayla?”
I smiled, waiting for him to continue. In this dusty little kitchen the world melted away as Mark painted a picture of history.
“They came down on us hard. RICO, we were dead to rights, every one of us. Worse, there was no way that vacuum of power wouldn’t be filled. Blood would spill, our families, our friends.”
“You made a deal?” I whispered.
“They offered a deal. In exchange for our freedom. We had connections, Kayla. They needed certain shipments to get through, and certain shipments to be stopped. They needed someone on the docks who wasn’t afraid to spill a little blood. Do the things the government cant. Nobody knows, outside of the club. They still come to us for
