said, her voice even.
“Yeah.” He nodded. “Probably.” He glanced across the desk at the clerk who’d stepped away for a moment, then bent lower to whisper in Mallory’s ear. “We just gave each other mutual orgasms. And we’re about to do more than that. Repeatedly. Throughout the night.”
Her mouth tightened at the corners, her eyes regarding him with a shuttered look.
    “In a bed,” he added.
Her mouth softened but she still looked at him. “Joe, I don’t know…”
Joe accepted the room key from the desk clerk, and they turned to move to the elevator. “Come on.”
They rode up in silence and he led the way into the room. It was spacious, more or less typical hotel-style but clean and newly decorated with yellow walls, bright framed prints, and a funky chair and ottoman in the corner. The king-size bed dominated the room.
“I like a big bed,” Joe said with satisfaction. He helped Mallory out of her jacket and hung it in the closet then did the same with his. “God, I want to lie down. What a fucking long day this turned out to be.”
    “I know.”
He threw himself facedown onto the bed and stretched out, releasing a long groan. He toed off his shoes and let them thunk to the floor. After a moment, he lifted his head. Mallory hovered near the window. “C’mere.” He held out an arm.
    She didn’t move.
Okay. They were going to have to talk. “What’s wrong?”
    “You scare me.”
His heart jolted. “I scare you?” He pushed up onto his knees and stared at her. “Why, honey?” Was she afraid of being alone with him? Maybe she’d been brave in the airport with people all around them and now she was regretting being alone with him. “Okay, I don’t really have to ask that. You should be scared, alone in a hotel with a stranger. Except…it’s me.”
Her smile spread slowly across her face. “It’s not like that, exactly. It’s more that I’m afraid of what you’re going to make me do.”
He flattened his palms on his thighs, kneeling on the bed. “I won’t make you do anything you don’t want to do. I promise.”
She nodded. “I know. That’s the problem. You make me want to do things I shouldn’t do.”
He tried to work through in his mind what she meant. “You don’t exactly seem like a prudish virgin,” he said slowly. “But maybe I’m wrong about that.”
She sighed. “You’re right. I’m not a prudish virgin. But I don’t want to be the opposite either.”
He slowly shook his head. “I’m not sure what you mean by that. Hell, Mallory, there’s nothing wrong with liking sex. There’s nothing wrong with liking a little kinky sex.”
    “Like sex in public.”
“Yeah.” He rubbed his palms along the denim on his thighs. “We weren’t hurting anyone.”
“But God, what did people think?”
“Who cares?” He held her gaze. “We didn’t know a soul there. We’ll never see them again. After tomorrow, there’s a good chance we’ll never see each other again either.” Eh. Those words didn’t sit well with him. He frowned a little but pushed the discomfort away. “If anyone even noticed, they were probably jealous.”
She closed her eyes and tipped her head back. “I don’t want to do something I’ll regret. I…may have done that in the past. I live my life trying to avoid doing things I’ll regret.”
“That sounds like a pretty cautious way to live.”
    “Exactly. It’s sensible. Responsible.”
    “Boring.”
She opened her eyes and the connection between them as their eyes met set off a storm of sparks inside him. Jesus.
“We’re attracted to each other,” he said quietly. “We have this one night. Nobody knows we’re here. Nobody knows what we’re doing but us. Why shouldn’t we enjoy it? What would there be to regret?”
“I don’t know.” She bit her bottom lip. He watched thoughts and emotions flicker across her face. Finally she said, “You’re right. Nobody knows. Why not?”
