final fight. Farrel wouldn’t be coming back from this one, even if he survived it. What Tate had to do was keep Larry and Mink out of it, and he felt as though he could. He had Rand’s back.
When Larry tried to circle the vicious combatants and attack Rand from the rear, Tate jumped back into the fray, barking furiously to surprise Larry before snapping at his muzzle.
Mink hit him again, teeth grazing his back leg, but Tate slid away from the bite. He felt faster. Braver.
The snarls from Farrel became sharper, more desperate. Yeah. A good ass-kicking did that to a guy. Couldn’t happen to a nicer fuckwad. A sharp snap sounded, and Tate knew that was the harbinger of a broken bone. Farrel screamed, a primal, awful yowling, and time stopped, everyone but Rand freezing in their tracks.
Rand rolled Farrel to his back, teeth closing on Farrel’s throat. Tate held his breath, wondering if Rand would finish the job. He didn’t need to; there were enough witnesses to Farrel’s defeat, because even Mink and Larry wouldn’t risk banishment from the pack by denying it.
Rand stalked over Farrel’s prone form, growling at Mink and Larry, lip curled back. Instead of ripping out Farrel’s windpipe, Rand shook the other wolf hard, lifting Farrel up off the ground with it, then slamming him down. Bam.
Farrel went limp, absolutely unconscious, but his ribs still rose and fell raggedly
Rand stalked over Farrel’s prone form, growling at Mink and Larry, lips curled back to show white, healthy canines, ready to rip and tear.
Mink bowed, head down low, butt up, tail still. Larry, now, he growled low, body stiff, not willing to bend.
So Tate jumped at Larry taking his ass down, rolling him so his belly was up. Larry’s surprised yelp sounded, loud and unhappy, but he stayed down when Tate put a paw on his chest. Asshole, dissing the Alpha.
Rand barked, a pleased, proud sound, and Tate ducked his head, his ears swiveling to catch the tiny echoes. No Alpha had ever made that sound for him. When Rand let Farrel rise, the beat up ex-pack leader rose, shaking hard, and limped slowly out of the clearing. Tate allowed Larry to follow, gait stiff, tail tucked.
Mink stayed, and Rand padded over to him, nosing his throat until Mink rolled, offering throat, belly and balls. Rand bit at Mink’s throat, growling and shaking the skin there, the ritual completed in no time. Once Mink had been schooled, Rand barked and nudged him after Larry and Farrel, the message clear. Follow and make sure they leave the pack land.
Rand came to Tate then, rubbing along his side, nuzzling his ear and muzzle in obvious praise.
Panting, Tate wagged, then broke away, heading down toward his cabin. He knew Farrel wouldn’t be back now. Rand could have killed him in a heartbeat and they all knew it. The fight had been so uneven as to be laughable. They would clean up Rand’s new home soon, but for now Tate wanted a clean, soft bed. He could smell Rand’s arousal in the air, and he wanted to cater to it.
They reached Tate’s cabin before Rand shifted easily to his human form, all that muscle and smooth skin making Tate howl. Just a tiny bit.
Rand stretched, chuckling. “Come on, baby. Get manly so we can have a shower. I want that jerk’s stink off me.”
Tate focused hard on his human body, recalling it. He felt stiff and a little bruised, but pride flowed through him, giving him energy. He’d helped to protect his Alpha.
“You were amazing,” Rand told him. “I thought you said you didn’t fight Farrell.”
“I never won,” Tate said. “This was different. I was defending you.” He said it and he knew it was true. Rand was the reason for the change. Tate’s natural place was with his mate. He took Rand’s offered hand, letting himself be tugged into the shower.
Rand turned on the water, steam rising almost immediately. Tate had a good gas water heater. He liked to indulge in his showers. They pushed close together so they both fit
