Zane. She wished for a cell phone so she could text him, but Race had insisted that they throw all their phones away when they got to Maine. He was convinced that Charles Langford would be able to track them through the phones and even listen to their conversations as well. It was like living in the dark ages.
She threw away her trash and put her tray back before walking slowly down the hallway toward her fourth period. She had to walk through the commons area and made a detour to the front glass doors to peek out at the parking lot. Sarah glanced through the cars and couldn’t see Zane’s silver jeep anywhere. She frowned and wondered if she should borrow the office phone to call Gretchen. Maybe Zane was sick? She glanced one more time to make sure and then blinked in surprise as the silver jeep she was searching for drove into the parking lot right as the bell rang signaling lunch was over.
She almost pushed through the front doors to run to Zane but held back as she realized he wasn’t alone. Zane hopped out of the jeep and rushed around to the other side to open the door for someone. Sarah’s mouth dropped open as she watched Zane and Charlie walk slowly through the parking lot towards the front of the school. They were both holding McDonald’s drink cups in their hands. Charlie turned and looked up into Zane’s face, laughing at something he had said.
Sarah felt confused, hurt and surprised as she moved slowly back from the doors. She hurried to the office and walked through the doors before Zane could walk in and see her spying on him. She ignored the secretary and peeked through the glass window as Zane and Charlie walked through the doors. Charlie had her hand on Zane’s arm for a moment before they separated and headed down different hallways. Sarah watched as Charlie looked back over her shoulder at Zane one last time. Sarah felt her heart stutter as she saw the expression on her face. She looked so satisfied, as if she had just gotten exactly what she wanted.
Sarah pushed through the office doors and hurried after Zane as the tardy bell sounded. Her class was down a different hallway, but she had to ask Zane what was going on. There had to be a logical explanation for the fact that he had blown off being with her for lunch and had gone somewhere with a girl that they had agreed just yesterday was possibly a witch, definitely psycho and no one they wanted to be around. Something was up.
“ Zane!” she yelled out as he put his hand on the door knob. Zane glanced up, saw her and looked surprised. He looked at her for a moment as if he had forgotten who she was and then his eyes cleared and he grinned. He walked quickly towards her and pulled her in for a big hug.
“Wow, you look pretty today,” he said and leaned down as if to kiss her.
Sarah pulled back and Zane frowned at her in confusion. “What’s wrong? Are you mad at me?”
Sarah frowned at him and looked down at her feet. “What were you doing going to McDonald’s for lunch with Charlie?”
Zane blinked his eyes a couple times as if he couldn’t focus on the question. “Charlie?”
Sarah’s eyes narrowed as she stared up at him. “ Seriously ? You’re going to deny it?”
Zane frowned at her tone and looked away with a frown. “I’m not trying to deny anything Sarah. Yeah, um, I did have lunch with Charlie today. She’s actually really nice. I think we all kind of rushed to judgment yesterday. And there’s no way she’s a witch. You’re going to love her Sarah. I invited her to your dad’s house after school so we can hang out. You can come too. I mean, only if you want to though.”
Sarah’s mouth fell open and she shook her head, stunned speechless.
Zane looked at her expectantly and then looked confused at her reaction.
“Come on Sarah. If we’re going to live here, we need to make new friends. We’ll go crazy if we just hang out with our parents and grandparents as nice as they are. It’s called socializing.
