guess. And that was the last coherent thought she had for a long time.

    * * * *

    Graegor saw that Trudy was deeply asleep and slid off the bed, waving to the others to join him in the living room. “I need to get back in case one of the watchers wakes up, but you’ll want to know what I found out so far,” he said quietly.
    “Yes indeed. They’re working for Teivel of course?” said Crevan.
    “Absolutely. There was no hesitation in their accepting me when Mark knocked on the door and said Teivel had asked him to deliver me there. Neither of them had a clue what to do with me, so I’m sure they don’t know anything about shape-shifters or Teivel’s plans. They’re just hired muscle like Ralph was, and not a whole lot more intelligent than him either.”
    “How do you know that?” asked Penllyn.
    “Their surveillance is really poor. They have the cameras set up and videotaping all the time, but they hardly ever go watch themselves. They don’t move the cameras at all. They’ve got them focused on a couple of the main windows and that’s it. Apparently they weren’t even watching Mallory’s apartment until yesterday when Teivel phoned and told them to tape that, too. So don’t go out onto the roof garden. That’s the window they’re watching.”
    “That’s all quite reassuring. So what else have you learned?” asked Crevan.
    Graegor stopped and thought. He’d had plenty of time to just sit and observe during the day, and he’d formed a pretty low opinion of Teivel’s workers.
    “I think Teivel is determined to keep absolute control of his plan, possibly because he wants to keep all the rewards to himself, too. But that makes him vulnerable as the muscle he’s hiring is low-grade help. He’s determined not to hire anyone smart enough to work out his plan and want a share of it. That’s fine, but it means his helpers do just what they’re told and miss opportunities to do a much better job.”
    “I don’t suppose these men know what they’re looking for then? You said you didn’t think they knew anything about shape-shifters,” said Daegan.
    “They certainly haven’t said anything to indicate they know. They’re disinterested in the job. They play cards. They play games on their phones. They eat. That’s about it. From their conversation, it appears that Teivel comes around midday with fresh video tapes, and food and beer for them, and picks up the tapes they’ve made. So you need to send a different courier to collect me well before noon, and we’ll just have to hope they don’t mention me to Teivel.”
    “Do you think we could get Angus or William, whoever collects Graegor, to plant a bug? That way we’d know if they told Teivel about the dragon,” asked Penllyn.
    “Too dangerous. If they mention the statue, the first thing Teivel will do is look for a bug,” said Crevan.
    “Yes, but he’s going to find out sooner or later anyway because the men will say the power was off,” argued Daegan.
    “You know, these men aren’t great thinkers, but they won’t have survived in the world so far without a few clues. I bet they’ll just say the power was off, not that they were able to turn it back on themselves. They’ll likely think a safety switch tripped or something, and aren’t going to admit it took them hours and hours before they woke up and found out about it. If I were them, I’d just say the power went off and leave it at that. Also, because they’ll want to cover their asses, that may mean they don’t get all chatty and ask about the statue. They’ll want Teivel to leave their food and go, and not ask questions about the power outage. So I think a bug would be okay,” said Graegor. He had a good feeling for this. He felt confident he could guess how the watchers would think.
    But he really needed to get back. He had a feeling about that, too, and that was that one or the other of them was certain to wake up needing the bathroom, and he’d discover the power was
