that was destined to fight with men that didn’t believe in love.
‘It feels like we’re strangers. Now that we’re here, I’m not sure what we should do.’
He nodded as his tongue traced his lips. The urge to move forward and capture his mouth with mine was almost too much. I stopped myself, though. He had to want me as much as I wanted him.
‘Let’s take a nap,’ he said, getting up from the bed.
Avoiding eye contact, I picked up my phone and turned it on. So far, I had avoided it, knowing that my family would be trying to get in contact. I didn’t look up as Matt left. Part of me thought that he might take a nap with me. I ran my tongue over my teeth, resisting the urge to let my emotions overtake.
The first text I read was from Pisces. She wasn’t one to judge or get involved with others business. However, she also didn’t take kindly to her almost brother-in-law being whisked away from her. She was right. I hadn’t even thought of Derek and his life back in London. To be fair, I didn’t even want him to be there.
Pressing the button, I rang her. ‘I’m sorry!’ I cried when she answered.
The heavy sigh vibrated down the phone to me. I could hear the others in the background. They were always in the background. Forever able to be relied upon.
‘I wish you hadn’t been so spontaneous. It’s not like you.’
Someone spoke to Pisces. She ignored them, which made me feel better.
‘I know. I wasn’t thinking. It’s not…’ I didn’t know what to say. How could I tell her that Matt and I were completely awkward before we’d even had our first kiss?
The banging on my door drew my attention away from the conversation with my sister.
It sounded like my other siblings were getting ready for dinner on the other end of the line. My favourite time of day. The only time we got together, all twelve of us.
‘Remember to surrender. This is the hardest part. You thought being apart was difficult, now you’re in for a surprise.’ Pisces spoke over the noise in the home I already missed.
‘I thought that we would harmonise,’ I said, picking at the varnish on my nails. Blue flecks started to pile on the bed cover.
Someone knocked on my door again. Covering the microphone on the phone, I called for them to come in.
‘I can’t come in, muppet, the door’s locked,’ Derek shouted from the hallway.
I shook my head. Having a man around that called me a muppet was going to take some getting used to.
‘That sounds like Derek,’ Pisces said. ‘You’re lucky to have him there, you know that, don’t you?’
Getting up from the bed, I went to let him in. He stood with one hand tucked in his pocket. One of these days, when I was feeling better, I would get him out of the habit.
‘I don’t even know the man. How is that lucky?’
I moved back into the room, ignoring the bodyguard as he started to search. Rifling through my drawers, he checked every single one.
‘I’m not sure what he’s doing,’ I said.
He bent his head sideways, pausing to look at me. ‘Don’t screw up that little piggy nose,’ he said.
Pisces must have heard because she giggled down the phone.
Smiling quickly, I turned away from him. ‘I think he’s searching for bombs.’
Derek tutted behind me. Pisces spoke to someone her end. It was probably Antony.
‘Can Antony have a quick word with Derek?’ Pisces asked.
I glanced over my shoulder. Derek had been watching me. His head ducked when our eyes made contact.
‘Yeah, I suppose,’ I said, holding out my hand to Derek.
He frowned but took the phone from me. The smile on his face when he heard Pisces’ voice made me feel bad. I had taken him away from his family. I bit my lip, waiting to speak to my sister again. Derek turned away from me when his brother came on the line.
‘Don’t worry about me. Why didn’t you ring my phone?’ Derek dug it out of his pocket. ‘Oh yeah, I forgot, it needs charging. I have an adaptor.’
I shook my head and
