Destiny, but I donât think we gave ourselves away, either.â
âHard to be sure,â Hunter said. âIf a friend recognized Mira, an enemy could have as well. Dalton told us that he and Cole brought up the princesses with Yeardly. Any time we tell an echo who weâre looking for, we run the risk of getting discovered by Nazeem.â
âWhat were you doing off in the bushes with an echo, Cole?â Jace asked. âHow much did you spill?â
âIt was an old echo,â Cole said. âHe was friendly and guessed a lot about me. He could see the damage to my shaping power.â
âIf he could see your power, he might have targeted you,â Hunter said. âNazeem knows about your damaged power.â
âThe echo didnât come to me,â Cole said. âI went to him.â
âIf he was any good, he may have positioned himself where you would see him,â Hunter said. âIn an ambush, you let your prey approach. How nosy was he?â
âMedium nosy,â Cole said. âI think I got good info from him.â
âWhat?â Mira asked.
âDestiny went to the Cave of Memory,â Cole said, hoping the information would impress them.
âReally?â Mira asked. âHow long ago?â
âA few months,â Cole said.
âHe told you this freely?â Hunter asked.
âI have to do a favor for him,â Cole said.
âBut no bindings,â Hunter clarified.
âWell . . . not with punishments attached,â Cole said.
âWait,â Hunter said. âYou let him do a binding? I told everybody to avoid bound oaths.â
âThere was no punishment,â Cole repeated.
âI guess, strictly speaking, bound oaths have punishments,â Hunter said. âBut if this echo connected the favor to a binding, thatâs almost the same thing. What was the binding?â
Cole found himself unable to explain. After two failed attempts, he managed to reply, âI canât say.â
Hunter shared a worried glance with Joe and Mira. âHe wonât let you tell? Thatâs part of the bargain? Who was this echo? What was his name?â
Once again Cole couldnât get the words past his lips. âI canât say.â
âWhat did he look like?â Hunter asked.
After failing to give details, Cole shrugged. âI canât.â
Looking shaken, Hunter wiped his eyes.
âIs this bad?â Jace asked.
âMaybe,â Hunter said. He studied Cole intently. âMy guess is the binding seemed innocent?â
âYes,â Cole said, relieved he could spit out that much.
âDo you see any way it could endanger us?â Hunter pressed.
âNo,â Cole said, relieved again. âIt was a very simple request.â
âThatâs good at least,â Hunter said. âDid the binding require loyalty from the echo?â
Cole couldnât answer. He tried to nod but failed. âI canât say.â
âYou canât give us any details?â Hunter guessed.
âYes,â Cole said.
âBut youâre confident it canât backfire?â Hunter asked.
âYes,â Cole said. âIt seemed like the echo did me a favor.â
âWeâre so doomed,â Jace muttered.
âMaybe not,â Hunter said. âCole isnât stupid. Since the binding is keeping him from answering my questions, the info he got has to be solid. The binding wouldnât hold if it was based on a lie.â
âBut he could have been dealing with an agent of Nazeem,â Mira said. âWe donât know what Cole has to do. There could be a trap built into the binding.â
Hunter looked at Joe, who held up both hands defensively. âIâve never been to Necronum. You and Mira know much more than me about this place.â
âWe could have been exposed at the shrine in other ways,â Hunter said. âMira could have been
