answered absently, then turned his attention to Sonya.
Sharon walked back to the bed and touched Sonyaâs shoulder. âFinish telling Dwayne what happened.â
âAs I was sayingâI found my house in shambles. So I immediately went to find a phone. Then I thought I heard something in the kitchen. I remained cautious, but before I knew it everything went black.â
âYou could have been killed,â Sharon moaned, covering her mouth.
James nodded in agreement while Dwayne mulled her story over in his head. He pinched the tip of his chin and wondered if there was a connection to Curtisâs murder and Sonyaâs burglary.
âWhat do you make of it?â Sharon asked him.
Dwayne turned toward the rest of the group and shook his head. âI donât know, but I canât chalk up the incident as coincidence.â
She dropped her head back and closed her eyes again. âI donât see how they are related.â
âWhy not? You do realize, if your sister didnât kill her husband, someone else did?â
âKilled her husband?â James asked incredulously. âCurtis is dead?â
âIâll explain later, honey,â Sharon said.
Sonya opened her eyes but said nothing.
âSonya?â Sharon asked.
âI guess I hadnât thought about it that way.â
Dwayne recognized the fear in her voice for what it was. âDonât get upset. We could very well be grasping at straws.â
Sonya shook her head.
âTina Hudson, Sonyaâs secretary,â Sharon went on to tell Dwayne, âarrived to deliver some charts for Sonya to look over. She found Sonya unconscious on the kitchen floor.â
âI see,â Dwayne said thoughtfully. âWhere is she now?â
âShe went home. She had two kids to pick up from day care.â
âI wonder what they were looking for,â Dwayne wondered aloud.
âHave you seen her place?â James looked at Dwayne. âItâs a fortress.â
âYou have to admit, your being broken into right after Curtisâs murder is a bit suspicious,â Sharon agreed.
âWell, I donât see a connection,â Sonya admitted.
A light tap at the door caused everyone to turn around. Sonya moaned when a police officer walked through the door. âSergeant Freeman.â
âHello, Miss Walters. Dr. Johnson said that you were up and about.â
âI donât want to answer any of your questions,â Sonya said too rudely and received open stares from everyone. âHeâs the same arresting officer on my sisterâs case,â she offered as an explanation.
âLaura killed Curtis?â James asked, looking at his wife.
âShh, honey. Iâll explain later.â
Dwayne walked over and shook Sergeant Freemanâs hand.
âAh, Mr. Hamilton. What are you doing here?â
âIâm handling the Durden case.â
âOh, I see. Miss Walters went out and hired the best lawyer money could buy, eh? Well, it doesnât matter. Thereâs very little to this case. Mrs. Durden already admitted to stabbing her husband. Itâs an open-and-shut case.â
Dwayneâs smile faded. âI doubt that, Sergeant. I doubt that. Tell me, what brings you out here?â
âI need Miss Walters to answer a few questions. She seemed too busy in the past twenty-four hours to discuss her involvement with the case.â
âInvolvement?â Sonya sat upright to glare at the sergeant.
âI donât think this is a good time to talk about this. Perhaps after you obtain a subpoena?â Dwayne asked casually.
Sergeant Freeman smiled tightly. âI donât see why you would want to do things the hard way. I thought that Miss Walters was smart enough to come in voluntarily. I was mistaken.â
Sonya struggled out of her bed. Sharon tried to pull her back, but Sonya wouldnât oblige. âI think itâs time you left,
