Desire (#4)
it.
Benjamin stroked my back gently. “Are you okay? Do you need me to call the doctor?”
“No. I’m fine,” I muttered, moving past him and heading back to bed. “It was probably something I ate.”
He tucked the covers around me and pushed my hair from my face. “Try to go back to sleep,” he said. “It’s still early.”
I nodded and pressed my face down into the pillows, wishing the contents of my stomach would stop rolling around.
The alarm beeped on Benjamin’s phone.
I felt the mattress lift as he stood up. “Do you want me to stay with you today?”
“No,” I said. “I’ll be fine after another hour’s sleep. Honestly. Go to work.”
I snuggled down into the duvet but lay awake, staring blankly at the ceiling and listening to the running water as Benjamin took a shower.
As soon as Benjamin left for work, I showered and dressed quickly, leaving the house earlier than usual.
On my way to work, I took a detour and pulled into the parking lot outside the Bellevue shopping centre. For a few minutes, I just sat there with the engine running, trying to convince myself I was mistaken. I tried to scroll through the dates in my mind … How long had it been?
Dammit. This was stupid. There was only one way to find out for sure. I switched off the ignition, climbed out of the truck and held my head up high as I walked through the mall and into the CVS pharmacy. I hoped I wouldn’t see anyone I knew.
I grabbed the first plastic wrapped test I saw and shuffled up to the counter. Thankfully, the store was practically deserted this early in the morning.
The lady serving put the test in a discrete brown paper bag and handed it to me after I’d paid her the fifteen dollars.
Once I got to the Preservation Society, I headed straight for the restroom and pulled the pregnancy test out of the brown paper bag.
With trembling fingers, I followed the instructions. Peeing on a stick is not easy when you’re nervous.
I slipped the cap back on the test then turned my back on the little white stick, while I waited for the pre-requisite two minutes.
My heart beat faster as I counted down the seconds on my watch.
When the two minutes were finally up, I turned back to the test and squinted at the small panel.
    Oh, God.
I snatched up the test and held it up to the light.
Two blue lines. They were faint, but definitely there.
    Holy crap, I was pregnant.
