sister stood waiting, with a gentle smile on her face.
Gabe led her into the house toward the sound of voices, straight to the living room where everyone was assembled. She recognized the people in the room. All Love’s that Tony had pointed out over the last few weeks. Alexis’ husband, Cole, the island’s fire chief and Gabe’s brother-in-law stood by the fireplace talking to Declan, Reed, and Jackson.
Mia was seated on the couch riffling through her doctor’s bag. Alexis followed them into the room, and the conversation died.
“Thank you all for coming,” Gabe announced, running his hand through his hair. “Everyone, I’d like you to meet Lucy Brook Lynn Pate-Abbott. Lucy, these are only a handful of the Loves, but these are the ones that I think will be able to help us get you out of this mess.”
“Mess?” Declan asked, his gaze locked on Lucy.
Gabe squeezed Lucy’s hand. “You okay?”
    She nodded.
“Wow, I don’t know where to start.”
    “At the beginning,” Declan ordered.
“Well, Lucy is on the run from her husband, who tried to kill her, and I need all of you to help me…help us…figure out what to do next.”
Reed stepped closer and held out his hand to stop the conversation. His eyes never left hers. “Is your husband named Warren?”
    “Yeah, how did you know?”
Reed shook his head. His eyes glazed as he looked around her. “There’s video proof from her home security feed. She was in the kitchen when he tried to stab her.”  He held up his hand glancing around her head. “Oh, this isn’t good.” He blinked rapidly and pulled out his phone. “Sorry, I need to make a call and use the computer.” He rolled his hand for them to continue the conversation as he left the room.
“Uh, was that normal?” She glanced at Gabe.
“I’ll explain in a little bit,” he reassured her.
Mia rose from her spot on the couch and grabbed her bag. “First things first. Come with me and let me get a good look at what he did to you. Gabe can fill them in on everything else until you get back.”
“I’ll start the coffee,” Alexis announced, and she placed her hand on Gabe’s arm. “You did the right thing bringing her here.”
God, he hoped she was right.
Mia took Lucy’s hand and pulled her out of the room.

    Chapter 8

Gabe paced the room as he told Lucy’s story. Well, as much as she’d told him. Cole and Declan watched him pace, both of their faces stony as they listened in silence about his date with Lucy and everything he’d heard in her mind.
“Did you tell her what we’re capable of?”
“No.” Gabe stopped to look at them both. “I just asked her to trust me.”
“And you’re sure about this girl.” Declan gave a slow nod and stood, his comment a statement instead of a question.
    “Yeah.”
    “You like her?”
    “Yeah.”
“Don’t forget she’s married, Gabe. Things are going to get complicated and messy.”
“That’s probably an understatement,” he answered and let out a long breath. “But I’m willing to get messy to help her.”
Cole’s lips twitched into a full grin as he rose. “Bring on the dirt, boys. I’m in if you’ll let me knock this asshole into next year.”
Alexis walked in at the same time Cole spoke. “Oh great. You’ve turned him back into G.I. Joe. Does this mean Smiley and Stone Face are coming to visit? Because let me just tell you…I think they’ve both had enough of this island to last a lifetime.”
Stone Face and Smiley were the names she’d given to Cole’s ex-Special Forces friends who had come to play babysitter when Alexis had been in trouble.
“Alexis, baby. I’ll always have that mentality, no matter how domesticated you make me. I don’t think we need them yet, but I’m sure they’d come running if we asked. ”
“I’m sure that’s not necessary,” Declan announced. “We need to handle this with care. We need to prepare. The minute word gets out she’s on the island, we
