need to be ready to hit him with everything we’ve got. Until we know what Reed saw, we need to wait.”
“This guy is a douche,” Reed answered as he rejoined them. “He did everything she said.” Reed grinned. “And she got a lick in, too, before she ran. Good thing for her he isn’t very tech savvy. He deleted the video but didn’t remove it from the hard drive.”
“What did you see that made you leave the room?”
The door to the house opened and Avery and Landon walked in. “Where’s Lucy?”
“Wait…how?”
Avery walked into the living room. “I told Reed about our new client last time we spoke. Warren hired our company to find her. That’s why it was taking so long for us to get back. She’s smart and didn’t leave a trace. We were already on the island and coming home when Reed called after connecting the name to our client.”
“He what?” Lucy asked in a shaken voice from behind them. She shook her head. The fear was evident in her eyes. “I can’t stay. Oh God.”
“Lucy, dear.” Avery smiled and moved to put her arm around her. “He’ll never touch you.” She waved her hand to encompass everyone in the room. “These people will never even let him get close, and now that we know why he paid us to look for you, we’ve got the upper hand.” She grinned.
“How are you guys going to stop him? He hired you two to find me. He probably hired hit men to finish the job.”
Landon moved over to Gabe and leaned in to whisper. “Her emotions are all over the place. She’s about to lose it and run.”
Gabe didn’t need any more prodding. He was quick to move to her side. “Let’s take a walk around the lake. Just you and me?”
Her gaze refocused on his and a little of the anxiety left her face. She rested her palm on his arm. “I’m fine.” She nodded. “Really.”
“Why was he planning to kill you?” Declan asked.
Gabe glanced over his shoulder and pegged Declan with a glare.
“What? We need to know.” Declan shrugged.
“My money,” she answered. “He was hurting financially, and for a while, my gut told me that he was only dating me for my money.”
“Why didn’t you listen to your gut?” Declan asked.
“He signed a prenup. The only way it was void was if I died before him.”
“Did you love him? Do you still?” Declan asked, earning another glare from Gabe.
“My parents died, and he was there for me. He said all the right things, made all the right promises. I’m such an idiot.”
“Yes or no? Do you still love him?”
She shook her head. “No. I’m not sure I ever did. Everything was a lie.”
“And Gabe, how does he fit into your picture?”
I can see a future with Gabe, not that I’d tell any of them that.
“You don’t have to answer that,” Gabe announced. “Declan is like a human lie detector.”
Declan lifted his brow. “And Gabe can hear your thoughts. Judging by the look on his face, I’d say your answer sufficed.”
“Declan,” Alexis growled.
“If we’re going to help her, then she needs to know about all of us, not just me.”
Lucy took an unconscious step back. Her eyes said more than any thought crossing her mind. “You knew everything I was thinking while you were around me?”
Gabe remained silent and watched as Lucy lifted her hand to her lips. “That’s why you kissed me? You…you…” She shook her head. “I think I’ll go for that walk now.”
Gabe reached for her, and she stilled to look at him. “Alone. I…” She just shook her head and headed out the front door.
“I’ve got her,” Alexis announced and left the room after Lucy.
Gabe swung his gaze to Declan. “You didn’t have to tell her like that.”
“Better to rip the bandage, cousin,” Declan said, crossing his arms over his chest. “She’d seen how quick Reed came up with his answers and you told her about me. It was only a matter of time before she asked what you could do. Imagine if you’d slept with her. How she would have
