president of the United States? And no men allowed?â
âThat wouldnât be fair! I want to be president when I grow up!â Barry said huffily.
âI might, also,â Gooney Bird commented. âI havenât decided yet.â
âIâd like to be
king
,â Malcolm said.
âGood luck with that, Malcolm,â Mrs. Pidgeon said. âAnyway: males and females are considered equal in this country. They have equal opportunities.â
âSo? Whatâs wrong with our plan for Napoleon? Whatâs sexist?â Ben asked. Then he thought for a moment. âOh,â he said. âI get it.â
The other boys all got it too. âOh,â they said, one after another. âNo girls would get to see him.â
âYeah,â Barry said, in a disappointed voice. âIt wouldnât be fair. We need to think of something
fair
.â
âAnd,â Gooney Bird pointed out, âit should demonstrate another body system. We did his brain. And we did digestion. Remember what we learned about next?â She lifted one arm.
Today she was wearing a short-sleeved white blouse and a manâs necktie. She bent her arm and posed like a strongman.
âI find that humerus,â Felicia Ann said, and giggled. The other children groaned.
âMuscles!â they all called.
âRight. Letâs do his muscular system next. Doesnât that make sense, Mrs. Pidgeon?â
âIt does!â the teacher agreed. âAnd of course we know where we should take him to demonstrate his muscles!â
âThe gym!â
âRight. Weâll move him there at the end of the school day, so heâll surprise everyone in the morning. Letâs review what we know about muscles so that we can plan to make our signs. Who wants to tell me where our muscles are located, and what they do? Ben?â
âTheyâre all over our skeleton, and they make our bones move,â Ben said.
âTendons attach them to our bones,â Nicholas added.
âAnd theyâre stretchy, and rubbery!â Tricia said. âLike this!â She was holding a wide rubber band in both hands. She stretched it until her hands were far apart. âOuch!â she said when the band snapped back.
âRight,â Mrs. Pidgeon said. âVery stretchy. And they work in pairs. One muscle pulls and the other relaxes. So I can bend my arm, and then I can unbend it.â She held up her arm and all the children imitated her. Together they bent and unbent their arms. âTighten, relax. Tighten, relax.
âAnd please,â she added, âI donât want to hear a single person say that they find this humerus!â
Malcolm began to whisper it, but everyone said, âShhh.â They were all tired of the humerus joke.
âOh,
no!
â Barry said suddenly. He groaned, and put his head into his hands. Everyone was startled. They all looked at Barry. âI may throw up!â he wailed.
Mrs. Pidgeon rushed the large wastebasket to Barryâs side. âDo you want to go to the nurseâs office? Whatâs wrong?â
After a moment Barry looked up. âMy grandma and grandpa came to visit us this weekend,â he said, âand we all went out to a fancy restaurant for dinner. My grandpa said we could have whatever we wanted. And he paid.â
âWell, thatâs nice,â Felicia Ann said. âI would get spaghetti.â
âIâd get a cheeseburger,â Tyrone said.
âLobster!â Chelsea announced. âItâs
very expensive!
â
âI think Iâd have caviar,â Gooney Bird announced. âI have never once had caviar. And I would wear a fur hat.â
Barry looked stricken. He took a deep breath. Then he moaned, âI ate muscles.â
âYuck!â the second-graders responded. âYou ate
muscles?
â
He nodded. âThey were stretchy and rubbery,â he told them. âAnd remember we
