coffee beans into the grinder, then filled the coffee machine with water. âYou know, Iâm positive Iâm missing something. Iâm sure I bought more than this.â
The doorbell rang. Paul looked back over his shoulder. âYou expecting someone?â
Adrian checked his watch, and shook his head. âNo, Iâm not. Iâm kind of busy. Can you get that?â
Paul left Adrian in the kitchen and answered the door.
âCeleste? Itâs good to see you again. What are you doing here?â
âThis is Adrianâs. He forgot it. Itâs got to go in the freezer.â
Paul couldnât hide his grin. He didnât know what was going on or why Celeste had Adrianâs groceries, but he intended to find out.
âHeâs in the kitchen. Come on in.â
Paul wished he had a camera to catch the expression on Adrianâs face the moment Adrian saw Celeste in his kitchen. More than ever, it made Paul wonder what was going on. Heâd never met Celeste before Sunday, nor had Adrian ever mentioned her, which made him even more curious.
Adrian recovered quickly. He mumbled a quick thank you as he accepted the bag from Celeste, and shoved it into the freezer.
Paul crossed his arms and turned to Celeste. âHow did you like the services on Sunday? It was nice to see you there.â
âI really like Faith Community Fellowship. Iâm looking for a new church home, but I guess Adrian already told you that.â
âActually, no. He didnât.â
Her cheeks flushed, which Paul thought quite endearing.
âAs you can see, weâre about to start practicing for next Sunday. Would you like to stay and listen?â He smiled, and didnât voice his next question. Or hang around to watch Adrian?
âNo, I think Iâd better go.â
Adrian stepped forward to stand beside Celeste. âThatâs too bad. Youâd probably be able to give us some constructive criticism.â Adrian turned to Paul. âShe wouldnât play anything for me, but you should see her electric grand.â
Paul tried not to flinch when Randyâs voice piped up behind him. He hadnât heard Randy coming, but now that Randy had discovered the action, anything could happen.
âElectric grand?â Randy asked. âYou play? Are you any good?â
Celesteâs face suddenly paled, which Paul thought odd.
âIâm okay,â she muttered. âI really think I should go.â
Randy blocked her path. âWanna see my new electric piano? Itâs probably not as nice as yours, but itâs got some really neat features.â
Paul tried to bite back his grin. He never tired of watching Randy in action, especially around women.
Celeste looked doubtful. âBut youâre supposed to be practicing. Iâm interrupting.â
âYouâre not interrupting. We havenât started yet.â Randy jerked his thumb over his shoulder. âItâs in the other room.â
Adrian cleared his throat and stepped forward. âRandy, didnât you hear the lady? She doesnât want to stay.â
Randy covered his heart with his palms and turned, making direct eye contact with Celeste and Celeste only. âBut Iâm not very good. If you could give me some tips, Iâd be forever in your debt.â
Celesteâs face flamed. Adrianâs eyes narrowed.
Paul tried not to laugh. He was having more fun now than he would have if they had been practicing.
âOkay. I suppose I can at least look at it,â Celeste mumbled. âIs it the same one you had at the church?â
Quietly, she followed Randy into Adrianâs den, where everything was set up, ready to begin their practice.Randyâs new electric piano and Bobâs drums sat in the back corner. The guitar amps were pushed against the wall. Paulâs bass guitar lay in its case on the floor, as did Adrianâs guitar.
Celeste played a few notes with
