anyway. I was eating a sandwich and cracking up with Mia,Alexis, and Emma about something that happened in gym class when Olivia Allen marched up to our table.
Olivia has thick brown hair, with brown bangs across her forehead. She gets pretty dressed up for school, and today she was wearing black tights with a black denim skirt and a shimmery silver top. She stood there, posed with her hands on her hips, like a model in a magazine. I figured she was going to ask Mia something, or say something dumb about my purple jeans, but I wasnât prepared for what she actually said.
âI canât believe your mom is dating Mr. Green!â
My stomach sank. I could see Mia and Alexis practically choking on their sandwiches, and Emmaâs eyes were huge. I knew they were probably mad I didnât tell them, but I had to deal with Olivia first.
âSo?â I asked, trying to look like I didnât care.
Olivia stood there, not knowing what to say. I guess she was hoping for more details, but I wasnât about to give them up.
Oliviaâs brain must have gotten tired, because she just tossed her hair behind her shoulder and walked awayâback to the table where she sat with Callie and the other girls in the BFC. I was so madat Callie! After everything we had talked about yesterday, she had gone and blabbed to the BFC. How could she?
I turned back to the table, and my friends were all staring at me.
âHow come you didnât tell us?â Mia asked. She didnât sound angry, thankfullyâjust surprised and a little bit hurt.
âIâm sorry!â I blurted out. âIt was just . . . so weird! I didnât want anyone to know.â
âSo itâs true?â Alexis asked.
I nodded. âYes. Jeff is Mr. Green. I didnât know either until I met him that night.â
âCan you help me with my math homework?â Emma asked, and everyone giggled. Thatâs when I knew that everything was okay.
âIt is definitely weird,â Mia said. âSuper extra weird. I didnât think parents were even allowed to date teachers.â
âWe can check the school handbook, but Iâm sure itâs allowed,â Alexis said. âAt least, maybe it is as long as Mr. Green isnât teaching Katie.â
âYeah, Mom said that might be an issue. So I guess itâs good I have Mr. K. for math,â I said.
Then Mia let out a little squeal. âWait a second. So Mr. Green was actually in your house?â
âYeah, he ate dinner with us, and then we watched a movie,â I replied.
âIs he the same out of school as he is when heâs in school?â Emma asked, her blue eyes filled with curiosity.
âYes,â I answered. âHeâs nice, and heâs funny.â
âI still canât believe it,â Mia said, shaking her head. âYour momâs boyfriend is Mr. Green. Weird!â
Alexisâs eyes suddenly narrowed. âWait a second. How does Callie know?â
I sighed. âYesterday. Mom invited Jeff to go with us to Callieâs momâs birthday party. I told Callie not to tell anybody,â I said, but as soon as the words came out, I realized I might not have said that, exactly. I told Callie nobody else knew. But she should have understood!
Alexis made a face. âIf the BFC knows, then the whole school will know soon.â
âThatâs what Iâm worried about.â
âNobody will care,â Emma tried to reassure me, but I wasnât so sure.
As I finished my sandwich, I looked over at Callie. I was hoping sheâd look over at me, so I could give her my mad face. But she and Olivia were talking and laughing and not looking in my direction.
I opened up my lunch bag and took out a cupcake. It was a vanilla one from the batch we made for Callieâs party, only I had put lots of sprinkles on this one. (I am a little sprinkle crazy these days.)
As I took a bite, I heard a
