âOh.â
âItâs an old trick,â Felicity says softly. And I can see what happened all right. The guy asks all boys who look like me for directions until one canât answer and that one is me. The kid from out of town â the kid heâs looking for. Iâm stunned like an owl in torchlight. Iâm also stupid.
âYou think Scottâs sent someone home to check where we are?â Dev says.
âThatâs why we say no calls, no postcards.â Max is frowning again.
âCan someone trace a mobile?â Dev asks.
Max blows air out of his mouth, thinking. âIf they have the right equipment. It would depend if Scott knows the right crooks.â
Devâs holding his head in his hands. âWhat do we do now?â
I hate it that Iâm the one whoâs made Dev like this. âWhat if it was just an accident yesterday and not anything to do with Scott?â How I want that to be the truth. All three of them look at me. I know Iâve stuffed up big time with the phone, but they donât blame me, I can tell. Dev looks tired, not as tense as he was. Max is thoughtful; even Felicity looks like sheâs winding down. I breathe a bit easier.
âWeâll stay here for a while,â she says. âHe may not know where we live. Did you tell Mei that?â
âNo, I only mentioned Beachport.â
âThen we donât go to town. Iâll tell the police and theyâll keep watch.â
âBut we have to go to town.â I stand up now, horrified.
âWhy?â Dev asks. Even his voice sounds tired. Hope heâs not tired of me.
âMeiâs coming. It was going to be a surprise. Her fatherâs bringing the trawler down. Heâs dropping her off at the jetty today.â

Felicity decides that she and Max will go to the jetty to meet Mei and her father and tell them she canât stay.
âBut I have to go.â It bursts out of me. Felicity turns to give me a startled look and I turn my tone down a notch. âMei wonât understand. We planned this.â I have a wavery feeling in my gut. I have to see her.
Felicity looks to Max for help so he answers me instead. âIf the guy who spoke to you is in with Scott, he knows only you. And Dev now.â
âYes,â Felicity adds, âhe may not realise weâre with you. That ute was out of sight when we turned the corner yesterday.â
âUnless he saw you diving together,â Max reminds her. Now I know why Max didnât think that was a good idea.
âBut isnât there some way we could go to the jetty so no one recognises me?â
Thereâs a silence as if they are deciding whoâs going to tell me the bad news. They silently choose Max. âDo you want Mei to be in danger?â he says.
âOf course not.â
âAs soon as youâre seen talking to her, she could be a target too.â It hits me then what being a target might mean. Being pushed off the road â just scare tactics? Or worse?
âThis way is safer for Mei.â Maxâs voice is encouraging, wanting me to see his point.
I donât like it but I understand. âCan you give her a note for me?â
Max sits back and smiles. âSure, good idea. That way sheâll know weâre on the level.â
Good idea , he said; at least Iâve had one good idea.
âCan I say whatâs happened? She wonât buy it otherwise.â
Felicity bites her lip; I havenât seen her do that before. She hesitates before she speaks, so I know she can see Iâm upset. âSay youâre not on a holiday but donât mention the accident yesterday. We still donât know for sure. Have you told her already?â
âNo.â
Felicity smiles at me. She doesnât hug me like Gran would but I see the sympathy in her eyes.
I leave them to work out the details of meeting Mei and go to my room. I find some paper and a
