starmin for that fact to sink in.
âYou mean you donât have a desk? Or a cozy chair?â Leona gestured to her own desk and chair.
âNo.â Ophelia shook her head. âI just sitâ¦and workâ¦on my bed.â
âNo holo-screen?â
âNo. I use my Star-Zap.â
âNo
mirror
? Not even
one
?â
Ophelia shrugged apologetically.
âWhat about personal items?â She smiled, remembering some of Scarletâs more âinterestingâ thingsâlike her rather gruesome collection of globerbeem egg cases and her old moonmoth-eaten top hat and black velvet cape.
âWell, I have the Wish Pendant Lady Cordial just gave meâ¦.â
âOoh, let me see!â Leona said.
Ophelia pulled up her plain yellow sleeve to reveal a thick metal bracelet studded with yellow star-shaped jewels.
âNo way! I have a cuff, too!â exclaimed Leona. She showed Ophelia hers. âStartacular, no?â she said. âSoâ¦what else?â she asked eagerly.
âWhat else?â Ophelia looked puzzled, so Leona explained by scooping up a cute little stuffed glion from her star-shaped beanbag chair. She tickled its chin and it purred. Then she ran her hand down its golden back. âShine like the superstar you are!â it roared.
Leona hugged it close. âThis,â she said proudly, âis my Glionny. Iâve had him since I was a baby. He never says anything more than once.â
âOoh! May I see him?â Ophelia asked. She held her hands out and Leona passed him to her. âHello, Glionny,â she said, gingerly petting its star-studded mane.
âGlow like you mean it!â the toy purred.
âSee?â Leona said. âYou must have some special things from home, tooâ¦?â Her voice trailed off.
âNoâ¦not really.â Ophelia kept her head down.
âWhere are you from, anyway?â Leona asked.
âIâm not exactly sure,â said Ophelia. âBut Iâve lived in Starland City for as long as I can remember.â
âOkay, first lesson,â said Leona. âBe proud of who you areâand that includes where youâre from! Thatâs one way to stand out. How amazing that you live in Starland City! Iâm sure youâve had so many incredible adventures. Unlike meâwhoâs from little old Flairfield.â She closed her eyes and pretended to snore. âNot that Iâm not proud of it,â she said, her eyes popping open again. âNaturally, I am. But listen to this: can you believe I never once traveled farther than Flairfield Lake until I came here, to Starling Academy? For real! I
know
!â Leona groaned. âItâs my parents. Ugh.â She sighed. âTheyâre homebodies.â She rolled her eyes. âWhat can you do?â She smiled.
âAll I can say,â Leona went on, âis thank the lucky stars I got into Starling Academy! Best day of my lifeâso far. My parents made it
very
clear that if I didnât, it would be Flairfield High for me. Even when I got accepted, they asked me to think about giving up my place and staying home. Can you
imagine
? Pass up this chance? Has any Starling ever even done that before? Never onceâI asked. Not that wish granting is my one goal in life, of course. Some Starlings could settle for that, but not me. As you can probably tell, I have lots of other talents.â She nodded toward her stage. âIâm kind of on my way to being a superstar, which is why Starland City is
the
place for me! Stillâ¦â Leona picked up a holo-picture from her bedside table and blew each member of her family a kiss. The people in the picture each blew one back. âI do miss my family a lot. Arenât they cute?â She turned the picture so Ophelia could see her two little sisters, her two older brothers, and, in the middle of them all, her mom and dad. âBut enough about me, already! I want
