too. Oddly, though, a delicious meal did not have the same effect on the other Star Darlings, who left the café seeming more irritated than ever before.
Breakfast the next morning wasnât much different, though some arguments had changed.
Sage and Cassie were bickering about holo-books. Cassie was certain that Sage had borrowed her copy of
Once Upon a Starry Night
.
âI didnât borrow it,â Sage said.
âBut I saw it in your hands,â Cassie argued, her eyes blazing behind her star-shaped glasses.
âI picked it up, itâs true,â Sage admitted. âBut it seemed kind of boring, so I put it back on your shelf.â
Cassieâs mouth opened in disbelief. âBoring? Are you serious?
Once Upon a Starry Night
is the best book ever. Whatâs wrong with you?â
âWhatâs wrong with
you
?â Sage retorted.
âAnd whatâs wrong with
you
?â Libby suddenly said, staring daggers at her roommate, Gemma.
âWho, me?â asked Gemma.
They had their own squabble going, about Gemmaâs housekeeping skills, which Libby deemed startacularly poor.
âThatâs what happens from living on a farmâmessy seems normal,â said Libby.
âThatâs not true,â Gemmaâs older sister, Tessa, said. âWe had to be very neat, but Gemma could never get the hang of it.â
Tessa, meanwhile, had her own issues with Adoraâspecifically over their shared bouquet. Tessa thought the coral flowers looked much more pleasing on her green side of the room and clashed horribly with Adoraâs blue. Adora found the argument frankly absurd, however, as her holoâcolor wheel clearly proved.
As they went on and on, Leona turned to Ophelia and rolled her eyes in a weary âWho cares?â arc.
âOh, my stars,â Leona remarked to Ophelia as they left the table together, arm in arm. âIs it me, or did everyone wake up on the dark side of the moon today?â
âSo they arenât always like that?â asked Ophelia.
âOh, no,â Leona said. âWellâ¦â She rethought that. âMaybe, sort of, lately. But never as bad as today.â She shrugged. âLucky us, is all I can say. I was actually having the same problem with my old roommate until you took her place.â She gave Opheliaâs arm a happy squeeze. âWeâre like the perfect roommates! Itâs as if weâve known each other forever already, donât you think?â
Ophelia smiled and nodded. âItâs a cosmic connection!â Leona continued. âFor instance, I used to get mad at Scarlet for moving our flowers around, too. But with you I donât care. Weâre roommates. We
should
share!â
âWhat do you mean?â asked Ophelia. âMove what flowers? Where?â
âOur bouquet. You know.â They emerged from the café and into a misty, sparkly rain. Leona closed her eyes and turned her face up, and Ophelia did the same. âDid you know they say that the rain on Wishworld doesnât even
sparkle
?â she asked Ophelia. âAnd that the lakes there
reflect
light but donât make any of their own?â
âAmazing,â Ophelia said, nodding. âHow do they get glitter into their star showers do you think?â
âBeats me.â Leona shrugged, pulled out her Star-Zap, and dialed up an energy bubble umbrella for them both. âAnyway, I donât know where you put the flowers, but itâs fine. I donât care,â she went on.
âBut I didnât move them,â replied Ophelia.
âYou didnât?â Leona turned to her just as the lights throughout the campus shifted spectrum, turning from warm white to rosy pink.
âTime for first period already?â exclaimed Leona. âI guess I better get going to Wish Theory.â
Ophelia was on her way to Wish Energy Manipulation. They arranged to meet up before Star Darlings
