have bothered you,” Travis said, turning around and heading for the car.
“Wait a minute,” Dario said, reaching out and grabbing Travis’ arm. “Why did you come here tonight?”
“I thought you were a vampire,” Travis said bluntly.
“Why the hell would you ever think something like that?” Dario asked his lip curling in disgust at the thought.
“Your unusual spending habits,” Travis answered, motioning to Paige.
Dario looked over at her, his eyes flashing wide with recognition. “Well hello Ms. Strong. I didn’t know you had a wild side.”
“I didn’t,” Paige said her face a mask of confusion. Travis could tell she didn’t know what was going on and it was beginning to frighten her. “I just told him how you shop.”
“A lone wolf trying to hold on to his human side,” Travis said, looking back at Dario. “I’m sorry to have bothered you.”
“Wait!” Dario shouted, grabbing for Travis again. This time Travis yanked his arm away, nearly pulling the smaller wolf forward onto his face.
“Do not touch an alpha unless he says it’s ok,” Travis said, baring his teeth at Dario.
“I am sorry,” Dario said. “I did not mean for us to fight before, you were a strange wolf encroaching on my territory. When you told me you were from the Bowshot pack I stopped, you saw it. You’re the new alpha? I can help you with whatever you need.”
“I have no use for a mangy and weak usurper,” Travis said, getting close to Dario. He was now just inches from the other wolf, looking down on him. He knew Dario could feel Travis’ hot breath on his neck. The only view Travis afforded him was one of his wide, powerful body.
“Guys, stop,” Paige started to say.
“This does not concern you, human,” Travis said.
Finally Dario backed away, his eyes falling away from Travis. “I said I was sorry and I meant it.”
“Apologies are for the weak,” Travis said. He looked over at Paige. “Let’s go.”
    “But,” she started to protest.
“Let’s go now,” Travis said, annoyed with her protest. This was wolf business and she didn’t understand.
“Travis I….”she said once inside the car.
“Not now,” he said, shooting her a deadly look. “Drive.”
Her eyes grew wide with fright, but she obeyed him, slamming the car into reverse and quickly backing away from Dario. The lone wolf stood at the top of the hill, his eyes on the ground. He had submitted completely to Travis. As they pulled away Travis glanced back at him, hoping that he would never see the usurper again.

Chapter 8

Paige didn’t know what to say as they drove through town. Travis was still fuming in the passenger seat, staring out at the moon. She didn’t know what had set him off, but it was obvious he was incredibly bothered by what had happened, but she was afraid to inquire any more.
Finally they pulled up to her trailer, not a soul in sight. Travis still didn’t say anything, walking through the front door hastily and plopping himself down on the couch.
Paige stared at him from her spot standing by the couch, his face was a mask of anger. There was another emotion there, she could tell. She had always prided herself at being able to read people, even an alpha wolf. She studied him sitting there before it hit her: pain. There was pain evident on his face.
It’s not going to happen like this, she thought. He’ll never respect me if I don’t stand up to him.
She’d read enough novels with Fabio on the cover to know a true alpha male isn’t looking for someone who will bow to him, he’s looking for someone that will challenge him. She hoped Travis was ready for this challenge.
Stepping in front of his line of vision she took a deep breath and spoke. “What the hell was that all about?”
Travis sat up and glared at her, unhappy he was being challenged. “It is none of your concern. It is wolf business.”
Paige wasn’t going to back down from this, not by a long shot. “Like hell it’s
