this is Cadence. Cadence, this is my
beautiful mother, Elizabeth.”
“Nice to meet you,” I said.
    “Mother, Cadence was just leaving.”
His mother stuck out her hand to shake mine and then
at the last minute she asked, “What is your last name?”
    “ Devons , ma'am.”
I was startled to see his mother’s eyes grow wide.
“How did you two meet?”
“Oh, mother, we met at the club, it's no big deal.
Anyways, I need to get going and you probably should as well.”
I found his mother to be very odd. I wondered what the
deal was with her, especially when she had heard my last name. Why had she
looked so shocked? It was as if she had recognized my name. But that was
impossible, wasn't it? A chill ran up my spine when I thought about the
possibility that his mother may know more about the MOB than I had realized.
Would she know about the murder of my parents, and if so, was I now in danger?

    Damon

A few days had passed since my night with Cadence and
I was back at the company. It was just a front, but I had to make time there as
if it was a real company. I smiled every time I went there, however, because it
was amusing that we were able to hide what the MOB was doing with the company.
We were doing lots as well: selling drugs, running prostitutes, plus we controlled
a lot of the drugs and guns that went out on the streets of L.A. and the
surrounding area. We did a lot of bad in Hollywood and I liked every bit of it.
We were a powerful family and it took a brave group to come up against us. I
couldn't believe how amazing it was that I had become the head of the MOB in a
short period of time.
I was sitting in the office that used to be my father’s.
It was a powerful feeling sitting in his chair, doing the business he used to
handle on a daily basis. I was proud of all that I had already achieved in the
short time that I had become boss. It was a head trip being the leader of a
strong and powerful MOB. It was everything that I could have ever dreamed of
and it had literally just fallen into my hands. I couldn't wait to exert my
authority all over the damn place. People were about to hear a new roar all
over town. That was definitely my intention, to bring the family further than
it had ever been. My father had no idea who he had been smothering. I was about
to bring a hailstorm to anyone that got in my way.
I looked up as my mother came in and started talking
immediately. She barely had a chance to say hi before she came in chattering. I
almost laughed but she would probably slap me. She had been as powerful as my
father when she had stood by his side. She was a force to be reckoned with and
had been a great match for my father. I loved watching her in action; if you
didn't know her you would find her incredibly scary.
“Damon, it's very important that you find someone to
fill your position immediately. I know you never felt that it was an important
position but it is and someone needs to be handling the money as soon as
possible. You need to get through most of the interviews today for the head
accountant position.   There needs to be
someone watching the money coming in and out. You know we need to make as much
money as possible and make sure that it is hidden from the government. No one
needs to know that it's MOB money, I can't stress this enough to you.”
She just railed off the speech without barely
breathing and I hadn't even had a chance to get a word in edgewise. When she
wanted something she usually got it. I admired her not only as a mother but a
strong woman as well. If I ever married I wanted to have a woman in my life
that was as strong as she was. To be in the business I was in you needed to
have a strong force by your side; that's why my dad had been so lucky.
I smiled at her. She was a tough broad but I loved her
dearly. I never understood how a bastard like my father had won over such an
amazing woman as my mother.
“I am well aware that the position needs to be
