A couple of people have been a bit â well â a bit ⦠surprised that weâre danseurs playing women.â
âReally?â Fran handed over the cake. âNot unusual, is it? Apart from recent pieces, what about La Fille mal gardée ? The famous clog dance.â
Jonathan and Dan both sighed and rolled their eyes.
âWhy does everyone know that?â Jonathan shook his head. âAnd I bet most people couldnât tell you what the hell the ballet is about.â
âItâs a bit of a hotch-potch, isnât it?â said Fran. âThe general public only know the Frederick Ashton version, I would think.â
Dan and Jonathan looked at her with respect.
âSorry,â said Jonathan. âI sounded rude.â
âDonât worry about it,â said Fran. âI suppose the people who object are those who only view witches as women with hooked noses and tall hats.â
Dan snorted. âFairy tale witches.â
âArthur Rackham witches,â said Jonathan surprisingly.
âWell, yes, though his were scary,â said Fran. âBut it was the Victorian view, wasnât it? All witches were female, when, in fact, they werenât.â
âThe Pendle witches were female, though,â said Dan.
âSo youâre saying that a woman could have been scandalised enough to play nasty tricks on the company just because the piece is danced by men?â Fran looked doubtful.
âIt does sound a bit naff, doesnât it?â Dan sighed. âOh, well, just a thought. My wife actually thought of it. She says women have much nastier minds than men!â
âNot all men,â said Jonathan. He looked round the room, his eyes resting suggestively on Stan Willis and Seb, who, as usual, was looking gloomy.
âWho are they?â asked Fran.
âThatâs Stan Willis, the stage manager,â said Jonathan.
âAnd company manager,â added Dan.
âAnd thatâs Seb with him. Heâs Stanâs partner.â
âAnd ASM,â added Dan.
âWhich is which?â
âStanâs the one with the glasses, and Sebâs the miserable looking one with red hair.â
âDoesnât he like being the ASM?â asked Fran.
âI donât think he much likes being Stanâs partner,â said Jonathan with a giggle.
âSo which of them has the nasty mind?â asked Fran. âYou implied that one of them had.â
âOh, Stan, of course.â
âShhh, Jon!â Dan nudged Jonathan sharply. âDonât stir anything else up.â
Fran raised her eyebrows, but nothing more was forthcoming. She went across to join Libby, who introduced her to Phillip Newcombe and Will Davies.
âI must say Iâm finding all these names very confusing,â said Fran, âespecially when everyone has a character name, too!â
âOh, donât worry about it,â said Phillip. âWeâre all interchangeable. Just a load of poofy dancers to the general public.â
Fran looked shocked.
âDonât take any notice, Fran,â said Libby. âIâve only known Phillip a couple of days and Iâve already decided heâs the wasp of the company.â
Phillip beamed delightedly. âDarting around hither and yon seeing whom I can sting.â
âI see you were making friends with Jonathan and Dan,â said Libby.
Fran nodded. âJonathan said he thought whoever had been playing tricks on the company would still be in London.â
âUnless itâs one of us,â said Will.
âWhy would one of you do something like that?â
âPerhaps itâs Jon himself. To get to dance Demdike.â Phillip eyed the two women with glee.
âI shall consider you seriously,â said Libby.
âYou will?â Phillip looked taken aback.
Libby grinned. âNot really. But it must have been rather upsetting for you all. What actually
