man?â
âWe broke up,â Jurnee flatly stated, crossing her arms.
âOver what?â
Jurneeâs foot rocked up and down. She sighed, and then cleared her throat. âHe hit me and yelled in my face, and you know I donât play that shit. So I left his ass!â
âAre you okay?â
Jurnee shrugged and turned her head toward the floor. âJust need some time to get my life in order about what I want to do.â
âYou talk to Janelle yet?â
âNah. But I plan to do so on Monday.â
âWell, you know youâre welcomed here.â
Jurnee looked around the living room. âIs Trevon up?â
âNot yet.â
âSo, what did you have to talk to me about?â
Kandi tugged at the edge of the T-shirt she wore with no panties. âHave you ever done something that you regret doing?â
âUh . . . yeah?â
âWhat was it?â
âWell, I guess my biggest regret is not allowing myself to fully open up to a man. Itâs not a day that goes by that I donât think about what it would be like to be in your shoes.â
âMy shoes?â
âYeah. I think about having a child.â
âReally! Shit. You ainât never tell me that.â
âItâs true,â Jurnee confessed, rubbing her nose. âI know life isnât perfect, but I want the best for you and Trevon and the baby.â
âLife ainât never perfect,â Kandi muttered with a pout.
Jurnee could see that something was troubling her friend. âWhat do you feel is wrong? You have Trevon, right? And the babyââ
âThings just ainât perfect, okay!â Kandi said, standing up quickly. She paced the floor, her eyes welling with tears.
âWhat am I missing, Kandi?â Jurnee stood. âEver since Iâve been here, youâve been acting funny. Why arenât you happy?â
âItâs real fucked up right now.â
âWhatâs fucked up?â
Kandi didnât answer.
Jurnee glanced down the hall before she spoke. âIs Trevon cheating on you or something?â she whispered.
âNo,â Kandi groaned, wiping her tears away.
Jurnee walked up to Kandi and laid her hands on her shoulders. âYou need to tell me whatâs going on with you.â
Kandi lowered her chin. âI canât.â She sobbed.
âYes, the hell you can!â Jurnee pressed, her voice filled with exasperation. She was fighting hard not to mention the abortion paper she found last night. Her hopes stood high on Kandi being open with her about her problem.
Kandi turned from Jurnee to sit back on the sofa. âItâs about what happened up in New York.â
Jurnee shook her head. âI thought you said you took care ofââ
âDammit, I lied, okay!â
âIâm starting to notice that.â
âYouâre not being helpful!â
âHow can I when you are keeping shit from me?â
Kandi ran her fingers through her hair, sighing. âItâs about the baby.â
âWhatâs wrong with the baby, Kandi?â Jurnee replied mildly.
âWhen we were up in New York, Iââ Kandi paused when her cell phone rang. Hearing the special ring tone, she answered quickly. âMartellus! I told you not to call this number!â
Jurnee shook her head upon hearing Martellusâ name. She made no effort to conceal the disappointment on her face as Kandi got up to take the call into the kitchen.

âFuck you, okay!â Kandi said, seething. âDidnât I make things clear to you yesterday?â She sat alone in the kitchen.
âYou know youâre wrong, Kandi! How the hell did you expect me to just let this shit go? My views are just as important as yours!â Martellus said.
âNo, theyâre not! I told you Iâll take care of this. So now you wonât have to worry about breaking your wifeâs special little
