helping Celia, and sheâll give you a ride back to Sinte.â She glanced at Celia. âIs that okay with you?â
âWhatâs the assignment?â
âFind out how six of our horses got into Tutanâs pasture.â Sally took off her glasses and waved them at Logan. âYour father-in-lawâmy damned neighborâcalled the sheriff again. He doesnât believe in handling these things between neighbors.â
âMy father-in-law.â Logan shook his head. âThatâs a real kicker.â
âI sent a couple of the kids out, but they came up empty, said they couldnât find any fence down. I just want to make sure. If thereâs a hole in that fence, weâll get it fixed before Mary gets back.â She made a smooth-sailing gesture. âPeace in the valley for Maryâs sake. You think heâll show up at the celebration?â
âI doubt it. But sheâll want to see her mother. Sheâs only got three days this time.â Logan lifted one shoulder. âKinda sorry I planned this party now. Only three days.â
âSheâs a short-timer,â Sally said. âPretty soon sheâll be home for good. But I wouldnât put it past your father-in-law to run our stock into his pasture just to stir things up again. Which is fine by meâhe cranks on his egg beater, Iâll come back at him with my Mixmasterâbut itâs not fair to Mary.â
âYou can pick your wife, but not your in-laws. Listen, Iâm all for mending fences, and Iâd stay and help with it, but Iâve got a meeting,â Logan told Cougar. He nodded at Sally. âWatch out for that one. Sheâll have you thanking her for letting you paint her fence.â
Sally laughed. âIf heâs lucky heâll get to stretch some wire, but thereâs nothing out there to paint. Iâll tell you what, though, I canât wait to paint this house. I donât care how many people try to horn in, Iâm saving it all for myself.â She wagged a finger at Cougar. âI might let you watch, but nobodyâs taking over on me.â
âSheâll get takers. You watch.â Logan clapped a hand on Cougarâs shoulder. âI gotta get goinâ. Iâll move the pickup so we can load up your mustang. Iâll buy these two lunch, Sally. The Fence Riderâs Special, on me.â
âOne volunteer sponsorship. Thatâs going on your tab, Wolf Track.â
âThis woman knows how to rake in the donations,â Logan told Cougar. âBetter than a cable TV preacher.â He gave Sally a two-fingered wave. âYou oughta get yourself a show, Sally.â
âPeople in love are so generous. Gotta strike while theyâre hot,â Sally called out after Logan. Then shegave Celia the calculating eye. âA weekly TV show. How could we work that?â
Celia glanced at Cougar. She was smiling. The horses werenât the Double Dâs only attraction for a woman packing some heavy cares. Cougar nodded, and her smile brightened even more.
âOh! Speaking of hot irons,â Sally said. She was checking her watch. âHank should be pulling in any time now. Heâs been out shoeing horses for a team-roping club, and Iâm not gonna let him cool off just yet.â She rolled back from her desk, put her wheels in park and levered herself to her feet. âJust the thought makes me weak in the knees.
âSo you guys get that horse loaded up and then help yourselves in the kitchen, will you? Pack up the Fence Riderâs Special. Sandwiches, chips, water and a wire stretcher. Enjoy the ride.â She winked at Cougar as she reached past him for her cane. âI know I will.â
âCanât wait to meet her husband,â Cougar whispered to Celia as they headed for the front door.
âHankâs a lovely man, and Sallyâs the rising tide that lifts all boats,â Celia said.
