eyes.
“What’s going on with Tristan?” I asked.
“What do you mean?” he smirked cocking his head to the side.
“I mean, what’s going on with him and Stephanie?”
“I don’t know princess; maybe he cares and just wants to be there for support, to be a friend, perhaps?  Does that bother you?”
“No, I guess not.  I was just shocked when we walked in there and he was sitting there holding her hand.  I guess I’m still on edge from earlier with Misty.”
“Brooke, don’t over think this.  They’re both adults and you also need to remember that he’s here to protect her, just as I’m protecting you.”
Dylan was right and I let out the breath that I had been holding.  I had just had a bomb dropped on me by my parents not even forty-eight hours prior to my dealings with Misty, I was feeling very edgy.  I was e lated that my sister was awake and happy. I had to believe that Tristan had something to do with her good mood.  I hoped like hell that her being awake meant good news for both her and my family.
Dylan and I walked to the small café outside of the hospital entrance doors.  It was a quaint, busy little place with its brown and tan café décor.  Bistro styled tables littered the open space for patrons to sit.  On the wall hung art work of coffee pots and tea kettles from different eras.  The smell of coffee and sweet pastries filled the air as we approached the busy counter and placed our order.
I decided on coffee, black with an extra shot of espresso and since I was feeling dangerous, I added a blueberry scone to my order.  Dylan put his hand on my back allowing it to travel until it rested on my ass.  He ordered the same thing.  I giggled thinking that he must be feeling dangerous too.

    CHAPTER 5

My mother and Tristan were waiting for us when we arrived in Stephanie’s room.  Tristan had given up his seat from earlier and it was now occupied by my mother.  My mother looked like your average older woman.  She was short and chunky; her auburn colored hair cut in a bob with a hint of gray on the sides, her eyes a beautiful shade of green; almost emerald in color.  In her younger years, she was definitely a sexy siren.  I looked a lot like her.
Dr. Chan had been in while Dylan and I had stepped away getting our morning crack.  Stephanie was expected to make a full recovery but would need to rest for the next couple of weeks at home and then start physical therapy.  She would need round the clock care.  We agreed that my mother would stay with her since I needed to return to work.  I would check in on both of them on my way home each night.  Tristan offered to stay with her on the weekends so my mom could have a break and Dylan and I could have some alone time.  Apparently Dylan hadn’t explained our new living arrangement to him, then again, I had been occupying so much of Dylan’s time with my life’s drama he wouldn’t have had the chance to tell him much of anything.
I walked over to Stephanie and placed a kiss on her forehead before Dylan and I left for the day.
“I love you sis ,” I told her.
“I love you too B ,” she said.  “Hey B, the animal shelter called, they found Ziggy, can you pick him up and bring him home?”
“Sure Steph, I’ll take care of it, you just take care of you and get better.”   I wasn’t sure where Ziggy would stay for the next couple of days until Stephanie came home, so I made a mental note to call around and see if there were any openings at a boarding kennel.
“Princess, what’s going through that beautiful head of yours?  You look like you just lost your best friend.”   Damn it, Mandy.  I hadn’t called her and I really needed to update her on Steph’s condition.  I was becoming a really bad friend.
    “Nothing important” I replied.
“Brooke” he said in a warning tone.
“I…I just, I’m thinking about everything.  Our living arrangement, Ziggy and where he’ll
