True to her word. Mindy went with Casey to the pharmacy where they picked up three tests and two bottles of water. On the ride home, she drank one bottle of water. She really needed to pee it was easy to take the tests. Now all three sticks were lined on the counter. They laid on the bed waiting for the dreaded minutes to tick by.
Mindy rubbed her back as they waited. When the alarm on the night stand went off, Mindy was the one who went in search of the results. Casey was ready to flip and just couldn’t do it. When Mindy emerged, she wore a big grin and blew out a breath. “Looks like I’m going to be an aunt.”
Casey ran to the bathroom and sure enough, all three tests were positive. “What the hell am I going to do now?” She turned to her friend. “Stop smiling.”
“You, stop stressing. Hold off on telling Mike until tomorrow. I guarantee you, he’ll be the happiest man on this earth.” Mindy reassured her with a big hug. “Then, you guys can get married and live happily ever after. Just don’t make me wear an ugly bridesmaid dress.”
“Why would you thinks things would be that simple? It can’t be, can it?” Her friend just nodded yes with the same goofy smile on her face.
After Mindy left Casey went to the full length mirror and pulled up her shirt. “I can't picture my stomach bulging.” So she walked to the bed and picked up a pillow. After putting it under the shirt, she went back to standing in front of the mirror. “Hmm, this helps me picture it a little more. It’s just too weird to even believe.
After taking a shower, she called Mike and told him to pick her up tomorrow. Mindy suggested not to say anything until after their graduation. Sleep came sooner than later, the emotions of the day had taken their toll.
Chapter Seven
The next morning Casey was feeling happy. She had dreamt of a baby boy that looked exactly like Mike. His eyes were the same shade of blue. The baby started to cry and she held him to her breast, while Mike looked on.
After getting dressed and straightening her hair. Casey was ready. It didn’t take long before the doorbell went off. After taking a much needed deep breath, she opened the door. "Wow, you must be so happy that it's your last day of school. You’re glowing."
The smile was hard to hold as she thought to herself. “You have no idea about what’s making me glow.”
The drive seemed to take no time at all. Mike prattled on about who knows what. She was too preoccupied thinking about his reaction. When they arrived at the school. Mindy, Leo and Luis were waiting for her. Mindy ran and snatched her away, claiming they needed to get into their seating arrangement. Yet all she wanted was to know if Casey had told Mike instead of waiting.
“I didn’t say a thing. I couldn’t, but tonight I will. I'm just waiting until we're alone” Yes, for better or worse, the plan was set.
When the ceremony started, they clapped and cheered when all their friends were called. Mike cheered the loudest when she was called up to get her diploma. Casey couldn’t help the frown that marred her features when she scanned the crowed and her mother wasn’t there.
When the ceremony was over, Casey excused herself and headed for the ladies room. She was lost in her thoughts and failed to see the man within the group of people to her right. When a hand lightly gripped her shoulder, she turned to see who it was.
She felt faint. Yet the feeling quickly turned to one of anger as she stepped back and away from his hand. “What are you doing here?"
"We have to talk."
"I've told you many times before. There’s nothing you can possibly say, that I would want to hear."
The man stepped closer and his eyes narrowed in anger. “I am tired of you not wanting to listen to me. You have to hear what I need to say to you. You don’t realize it, but your life is about to
