Though she was tiny in stature, her cheeks were rosy and round, as were Lily's. Both of them looked healthy, not showing any visible signs of abuse, mistreatment, or neglect. Heartened by this, I gave Flora a smile.
"It's nice to meet you, Flora."
"Likewise."
Her voice was quiet and melodic. She kind of reminded me a bit of Skye, who also had something of a soft, musical voice. I liked Flora instantly.
I invited her and Lily to come inside, asking if they wanted to join me for breakfast. "I just made some scrambled eggs, and there's plenty to share. I made a citrus salad with some canned grapefruit and orange slices, too."
Handing me a square-shaped object wrapped in a bright red-and-white patterned towel, Flora said they'd love to join us. "We have something to add to breakfast, too. We made you some homemade bread."
The delicious aroma of the bread filled my nostrils, and my stomach growled, though fortunately not loud enough to be heard above my thanks to Flora.
Soon she, Lily, and I sat at the table with plates of eggs, fruit, and slices of warm bread spread with butter. For several minutes, while Flora and I tucked in, Lily, who didn't seem at all interested in food, entertained us by singing songs, mostly about animals and "fishes in the sea."
After that one, Flora gave me a little smile and a wink. "She made that one up herself."
Smiling, I gave Lily a round of applause, prompting an encore of the "fishes" song.
But after that, she seemed to run out of steam and began rubbing her eyes. "Just tired now."
Flora asked if she might set Lily on the couch for a rest, and I said of course.
Lily waved to me while Flora carried her away. "Goodnight."
I waved back, smiling, though with a little ache in my chest, thinking how I'd love to have a little girl of my own; or a little boy, it wouldn't even matter to me. Just a happy, healthy child of my own. But it would never happen. It might happen for Skye, back in Greenleaf, but it would never happen for me. I wasn't even going to get to be around to be an aunt, either. At best, I'd still be living in Shadowfen.
At worst, I'd be dead, killed for my deception about my fertility. Though something was beginning to make me think Chase and Grayson would never do that, would never harm me in any way. I wasn't a hundred percent certain about that, though.
Once she'd rejoined me at the table, Flora picked up her coffee cup, saying she really hoped they weren't imposing. "We just wanted to welcome you to the village and see how you're settling in. I also thought you might want some company today, because who knows when the men will be back...if they even come back today at all. It might be tomorrow."
I set my own coffee cup on the table. "About that. Where are the men? I saw Chase and Grayson shift with some others and head into the woods just before you got here, but I was still sleeping when they left. So, nobody told me anything."
Frowning, Flora took a sip of her coffee before responding. "Well...there's been some trouble lately. And in fact...well...." She paused, frowning even harder. "We're all in quite a bit of danger here."
*
Instantly alarmed by what Flora had said, I spoke with a little tremor in my voice. "What do you mean we're all in danger?" I glanced over at Lily, who seemed to be already fast asleep on the couch. "Do you mean we're all in danger right this moment?"
Flora shook her head, setting her coffee cup on the table. "No. No, and I'm sorry if I made it seem like that. We're all in danger, yes, but not immediate danger. Even though Chase, Grayson, and my husband, Hunter, had to leave the village to deal with a situation today, they absolutely didn't leave us unprotected. Hunter is over protective of Lily and me, if anything, and Chase and Grayson are definitely very protective as well, as our alphas. They left at least half the pack here in Shadowfen to guard the village and make
