sure we're okay. So, please don't worry. We're not in any immediate danger."
I breathed a sigh of relief, leaning back in my chair. "Well, good. Good for that. But what is the danger? Why did Grayson, Chase, your husband, and the others have to leave? What did you mean when you said there's been some 'trouble' lately? What kind of trouble?"
Flora sighed, blowing her pale blonde bangs out of her face. "Just the same kind of trouble as always. Wolf trouble. Only a little...well, a little worse this time. This pack is a little more aggressive. A little more...well, pardon my language, but a little more pissed-off, frankly."
I sat, simply processing her words for a long moment, thoroughly confused. "But...when you say 'wolf trouble'...." Unable to make any kind of sense out of what she'd said, I gave my head a little shake. "Sorry. I'm just miles beyond lost. I thought our men were the trouble. I mean...they're wolf shifters, right? I just saw them this morning with my own eyes."
Flora looked at me with her blonde brows drawn together, though with the hint of a smile playing around her mouth. "Chase and Grayson haven't told you what they do for a living, have they? What they lead the whole pack in doing. I guess I thought they might have told you, but I should have considered that you only just got here last night, and the three of you might not have had time to discuss things."
With a little heat rising to my face, I recalled the previous evening and cleared my throat. "Yes, we...well, with me getting settled in, I guess we didn't really have much time to talk. Though in the truck, I guess Chase did ask me if I wanted to know more about him and Grayson and what they do, and...." I trailed off, suddenly and surprisingly a bit ashamed. "I guess I told him, 'Not really.' Probably a little rude."
Flora smiled, her blue eyes twinkling in the sunlight flooding the kitchen. "Maybe, but I'm sure you had all sorts of thoughts going through your mind right then, and you were probably a bit stressed. A snappy response is more than understandable in that situation. And if you want to know more about Chase and Grayson and what they and the pack do, I'll go ahead and tell you right now."
I nodded. "Yes. Please."
Flora took a sip of her coffee, leaning back in her chair, then set the cup back on the table. "Okay. Well, Chase, Grayson, my husband Hunter, and all the other wolves in the pack work for the royal family of Ashcrest. Basically, they are protectors. They protect all the little human-inhabited towns and villages in the area from other wolves. Wolves who are exactly like the ones I'm sure you've always heard about. Wolves who take pleasure in hurting, killing, and robbing; basically, all other wolves besides the ones in our pack.
“See, the wolves in our pack all realized long ago that they're not like other wolves. They don't take sick joy in all the typical wolf activities. Chase broke away from his home pack at a young age and started his own, and Grayson did the same. Then, eventually, they merged packs in order to have more strength in numbers. That's why our pack is a larger one than probably is typical, and that's why we have two alphas.
“So, anyway, not long after the pack merger, Lord Ashcrest, who hates the sick, cruel kind of wolves more than anyone, asked Chase and Grayson if they'd work for him, helping to defend some of the little towns and villages in the state, which Chase and Grayson were already doing, anyway. The only difference was that after being hired by Lord Ashcrest, they actually started getting paid."
I sat speechless for a long moment, stunned. "So...Chase and Grayson aren't the 'bad' kind of wolves? They're...they're actually 'protectors?'"
Flora nodded. "Yes, though honestly, that's not really even a strong enough descriptor. They're really lifesavers , in the most literal sense. Over the years, they've saved dozens, if not hundreds, of
