and whoever had been calling.
âIanâ¦wait up!â
I recognized the voiceâit was Julia. I stopped and spun around. She was running down the hall, a big smile on her face. She had a nice smile. It made me smile back.
âAre you going deaf?â she asked.
âSelective hearing.â
âWhat does that mean?â she asked.
âI was trying to ignore you.â
âYou were trying to ignore me?â she asked, sounding hurt.
âNot
you
. I didnât know it was you calling, and when I did, I stopped. Itâs everybody else in the school Iâm trying to ignoreâ¦if theyâd let me.â
âLots of people been bugging you, huh?â
âEverybody in the whole school,â I said.
âYouâre always exaggerating,â Julia said.
âThe only one who is exaggerating is youwhen you say I
always
exaggerate. It certainly feels like itâs everybody.â
âWay to go, Ian!â a boy said as he passed by and slapped me on the back.
âThanks.â
âWho was that?â Julia asked as the boy walked away.
âI have no idea.â
âAt least he is on your side,â Julia said.
âOn my side in what way?â
âYou know, supporting the boycott.â
âNot necessarily,â I said. âHe may have been thanking me because heâs getting a free lunch from Frankieâs.â
âYou have to be kidding,â she said.
I shook my head. âNope. Itâs running about fifty-fifty. Half the school is backing me in the boycott and the other half is happy to be getting a free Frankieâs lunch.â
âHow stupid. Do those people really think youâd cave in for a bunch of burgers?â
âActually, I think a thousand burgers with fries and drinks is more than a bunch.â
âIt doesnât matter if it was a million burgers because I know you wouldnâttrade your principles. Iâm proud of you!â she said.
âYou are?â
âOf course I am. Most people would have just given in, but not you.â
âThanks.â I didnât have the guts to tell her I still hadnât completely made up my mind what I was going to do. Somehow, though, her words had an impact. I did want to make her proud of me.
âI was explaining to Oswaldââ
âWhere is Oswald?â I asked.
âWho knowsâ¦and who cares.â
I gave her a questioning look. âDid you two have another misunderstanding?â
âI really donât want to talk about it. I better get to class,â Julia said.
âMe too. See you later.â
Julia rushed off in one direction and I hurried off in the other. Iâd gone no more than a couple of dozen steps when there was a hand on my shoulder.
âHey, buddy!â
It was Oswald. âYou just missed Julia,â I said.
âI knowâ¦I saw her.â
âYou did?â
âYeah. I saw the two of you talking. I just waited until she left,â Oswald said.
âWhy did you do that?â
He shrugged. âI just feel like I need a little space. She can be a little annoying sometimes.â
âA little?â I questioned.
Oswald laughed. âIf I tell you something will you promise not to tell me âI told you soâ ?â
âSorry, canât make that promise.â
âOkay, either way. Itâs just that I was thinking that maybe it wasnât such a good idea for me and Julia to start dating.â
âDo you think?â
âOkay, okay, I know you told me, and I know I should have listened to you, but whatâs done is done.â
âSo are you going to break up with her?â I asked.
âI would, but Iâm sort of afraid of her.â
This time I did laugh.
âGlad you think this is funny!â
âWell, it
is
funny. What do you think sheâd do, beat you up?â I asked.
âNoâ¦probably not. It just would be easier if she broke
