moving. He remembered to breathe. He had wanted to get very close to those women very quickly. Andâaccording to all those moviesâhe would have ended up very dead.
âDoes anybody show up here who isnât a team member?â the vampire in violet complained. It was her turn to sigh. âAnother night without a decent meal.â She glared at the male vampire. âIt was different, long ago . . .â
âIsnât that just like him?â the rose vampire agreed, staring at the Baron. âWhen you first meet, itâs all fangs and candlelight. And then once he gets you home . . .â
Both fanged females snorted derisively.
âBrittany. Taylor,â the male vampire chided, looking first at the blonde, then the brunette. âWe can discuss this another time.â He turned back to Lenny and the others. âYou may call meâthe Baron.â
âThe Baron is the final member of our team,â Karnowski explained.
âA mere member?â The Baron might have sneered. It was hard to tell with the fangs. âWould the team exist without my skills?â
The vampire women laughed, a sound as cold as winter wind. The Baron seemed not to notice.
Lennyâs brainâonce again his ownâkept trying to find positives. Ghost hunter, psychic, werebeast, vampireâthat pretty much covered all the bases. And these creatures were his co-workers, after all. Better to have them with you than against you, right? His gaze wandered back to the closed coffin.
âWe mostly do night work,â Karnowski explained, perhaps unnecessarily.
âHerbert,â Lenore said to the Baron. âWe have a situation here.â She briefly told him about Witherâs unfortunate conversion.
The Baron grimaced, showing far more of his fangs than he had before. âThis is what happens when I am not available. Theyâve transformed him during the day?â
Lenore nodded. âWe donât know how they did it. We have no idea even
who
did it. We have to suspect them all. But thereâs more.â She quickly went on to describe Ms. Siggenbottom and the corn dogs.
The vampireâs eyebrows rose in excited alarm. âItâs about time our team had a real challenge!â His pale hand clenched into a fist as his blood-red eyes looked to the ceiling. âWe will finally have a chance to test our true power! The Baron will triumph again!â
âOoh, the big bad vampire!â Brittany cooed. âWhy canât we see more of that at home?â
âHow long has it been since weâve had any real excitement?â Taylor chimed in. âItâs just been one long, endless night!â
âI should have listened to my mother!â Brittany agreed. âYou know what she always said: Why should a vampire buy the cow when he can suck its blood for free?â
The fourth coffin groaned and shifted against the wall, as if someoneâor somethingâinside was looking for a way out. The Baron pointedly looked away from the still-closed box. He cleared his throat, shifting his cape awkwardly across his shoulders. âWe should be going.â
âYouâre going out in
that
cape?â Brittany called. âIt looks like youâve been sleeping in it!â
âIf youâll pardon me?â The vampire moved out of the room at amazing speed. Lenny quickly followed before the two other vampires could look his way. The Baron slammed the door as soon as Lenore and Karnowski had joined them in the hall.
âDo you know how difficult it is to find an open dry cleanerâs in the middle of the night?â the vampire muttered. âPerhaps I should start meeting you upstairs.â
Lenore studied the undead fellow. âYou would actually get out of your coffin if I didnât show up to knock?â
The vampire shrugged his caped shoulders. âA fellowâs got to eat.â
Lenore nodded. âBut
