day,â Lloyd said. âI wouldnât be surprised if we have women lining up to cook for him.â
âOf course they will. Heâs gorgeous,â Mara gushed.
Sometimes Will got impatient with peopleâs reaction to his looks. After all, he could have been as evil as he was attractive, but occasionally his looks came in handy. Besides, with two deputies, he wouldnât have much to do. Getting to meet a different family every time he sat down to eat might be an interesting way to pass the week.
âIs it a deal?â Will asked.
âIt sure is,â Lloyd said. âAnd to prove it, youâre coming home with me for supper. Andy can arrange for breakfast tomorrow and Jordan for supper. By then we ought to have the rest of the week taken care of.â
Will could practically hear Jake laughing at the mess heâd gotten himself into. At least heâd have something decent to eat. And as soon as he got a chance, heâd look into what had happened to Idalouâs bull.
âMy first act as sheriff will be to make it a rule that no young woman is to be out alone after dark,â he said, directing his remark to Mara. âThere are too many drunks wandering around for that to be safe.â
âI already have that rule,â McGloughlin said, giving his daughter a severe look.
âThen Iâll leave it up to you to enforce it,â Will said.
âAnything else?â Lloyd asked.
âYes. My stomach thinks my throat has been cut.â
Lloyd laughed. âCome on. If we donât hurry, weâll be late for supper.â
Being sheriff had its advantages. Will had gotten up from Dorabelle Severnsâs table the previous evening feeling in charity with the world. A good wine and a stout brandy had topped off a very satisfying meal. Mrs. Davisâs breakfast this morning hadnât been as spectacular, but heâd had to push back from the table while he was still able to stand. He seated himself at his desk, opened a drawer, and idly surveyed its contents. âHowâs the prisoner this morning?â he asked Emmett, one of his two deputies.
âMad as hell and threatening to plant you in the ground next to our last sheriff.â
âSince I have no desire to be planted in the ground, regardless of whom Iâm next to, maybe we ought to let him spend a little more time in his cell.â
âWe never keep drunks longer than overnight.â
âSo?â
âSo there has to be some reason you want to keep him locked up.â
âYou think Iâm afraid of him?â
âEverybody else is. Heâs the fastest draw in three counties.â
âI keep hearing that,â Will said as he got to his feet. âI think Iâd like to see for myself.â
Emmett blanched. âYou going to face him in a gunfight?â
Will opened drawers in the desk until he found one with a pair of guns. âHow else am I going to find out?â
âIt wonât do you no good iffen youâre dead.â
âI donât plan to die.â He checked each gun for bullets. Both were empty. He held up one to show Emmett. âI donât plan to use bullets.â
Emmett followed Will back to the jail cells, shaking his head as he went. Newt sprang to his feet.
âLet me out,â he shouted. âI ainât done nothing wrong.â
âI suppose you consider it perfectly okay to force an unwilling young woman to let you kiss her.â
âI didnât mean no harm,â Newt said.
âIâm not interested in that just now,â Will said. âI want to see if youâre as fast as everybody thinks.â
A calculating expression claimed Newtâs face. âHow do you aim to prove that?â
âIâll give you a gun. On Emmettâs signal weâll both draw. He decides which one is the fastest.â
âThe bullet will do that,â Newt said with a grin.
âIt might if
