led to an unknown future. She felt paralyzed with uncertainty.
Then she remembered the babies who had died, their stiff grey corpses wrapped in coarse linen, carted away to unmarked graves. She shuddered and began to walk towards the nursery.
âJohanna,â someone whispered.
âWho is it?â Johanna asked, her heart pounding. She turned towards the voice. A dark shape was standing in the shadow of a doorway.
âItâs me.â
âWho?â
âMe! Cecile.â She wore her cloak and hat, and clutched a bag in her hands.
âWhat are you doing here?â Johanna asked.
âI know what youâre planning.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âYouâve been planning to run away for days now. I saw you,â Cecile said. âI saw you take some food from the kitchen. And you were asking about Altona ââ
Johanna shook her head. âI have to go. Weâll talk about it tomorrow.â
Cecile took a step towards Johanna. âNot likely. Youâll be gone by tomorrow.â
âBut ââ
âYouâre running away.â Cecile took another step towards her and grabbed her arm. âAnd I want to go with you.â
Johanna shrugged off Cecileâs hand. âSo, Iâm leaving,â she said. âThat doesnât mean you can come with me.â More gently, she added, âBesides, we canât both leave at the same time!â
Cecile pursed her lips as she peered along the corridor. âI donât care. All I know is that I must leave this horrid place. And I must leave today!â
âCecile, you donât understand,â said Johanna. She turned to face Cecile and put her hands on her friendâs shoulders. âIâm not going alone. Iâm taking one of my babies with me.â
âAre you crazy?â
âI canât ⦠I wonât watch another baby die.â
âDo you know what will happen if they catch you? Theyâll throw you in jail! Or worse!â Cecile paused. âWhich one?â
âWhich what?â
âWhich baby ? Iâm not talking about apples!â
Johanna pushed past Cecile. Time was growing short. She was afraid Daniel would leave without her. âI have to go!â
âPlease, Johanna!â Cecile cried after her. âPlease let me come with you!â Johanna looked back at Cecile. âYouâre willing to give up this job?â
âI donât care,â Cecile said. âI havenât heard from my family for weeks. Iâm afraid to go alone. I wonât be in your way and ⦠maybe I can help.â
What if I donât let her come? Johanna thought. Will she betray me? âAll right. You may come with me as far as Altona.â
âGreat!â She grabbed Johanna by the arm. âLetâs go!â
âBe quiet! Theyâll hear you.â
âSorry.â
âMeet me outside, behind the hedge near the road,â said Johanna. âIâll go get Rebecca.â
âWait,â Cecile said. âGive me your bag. Youâll have to carry the baby.â She grinned. âSee? Iâm already a help!â
In the nursery, one girl was dozing in a chair; two others were playing a game of checkers, out of sight of the babies. The babies were sleeping, or lying listlessly in their beds.
Johanna tiptoed over to Rebeccaâs bed. Rebecca was deep in dreams, her tiny mouth twitching slightly. Johanna picked her up. She felt her warmth against her chest. Just then, one of the girls said, âJohanna, where are you taking that baby?â
Johanna froze in her tracks. She felt her heart racing and could scarcely speak. âKeller ⦠Doctor Keller asked me to bring her to him.â
âOh? I didnât know he was here.â
âHe ⦠came by hired carriage.â Rebecca was reaching towards Johannaâs face and playing with her hair. âI must go. The doctor
