searching his mind for any memory of the person behind the video.
But he canât remember much.
(Eric was really drunk.)
âI donât know how they got that painting out of there, though,â he says. âWouldnât somebody have noticed a million-dollar painting leaving a party?â
Another round of meaningful looks.
âNot necessarily,â Paige says. âAnd itâs a six-million-dollar painting, actually.â
Jordan scoffs. âIf it was real.â
âWhich it totally wasnât,â Haley says. âCallum Fulchrestâs dad canât even afford waterfront property. You think he can pay for a Basquiat?â
âWhy do you think there hasnât been any news about it?â Paige says. âCallumâs dad is too freaking embarrassed to report it.â
âAnd anyway, his sonâs a wannabe date-rapist,â Haley says. âHe knows if he calls the police, itâs his own ass that gets nailed.â
âSo how do you guys know all this stuff?â Eric asks them. âI mean, you all left the party early, right? Did you, like, see who took the painting or something?â
Jordan looks at Haley. Something passes between them. Then Jordan turns back to Eric. Smiles.
âWe saw something,â he says. âYeah, I guess you could say that.â
68.
(Letâs cut to the chase. Iâm just going to tell you now:
Jordan and Haley and Paige stole that painting.
But you already knew that, right?)
69.
Itâs almost full dark by the time theyâre back in Capilano. Jordan brings the boat into the marina, and they tie it to the dock and walk up to the parking lot to Jordanâs BMW. Eric gets there first, and when he looks back, he sees Paige and Jordan and Haley huddled together. Theyâre talking about something. Haleyâs shaking her head. It looks like Jordanâs trying to convince her.
Finally, Haley just holds up her hands like sheâs disgusted. Turns and walks away from the others. She doesnât look at Eric as she approaches the BMW.
âDo you mind giving me a ride back to the law office?â Eric asks Jordan when he and Paige are within earshot. âI left my momâs ride when I bailed on my internship.â
Jordan unlocks the Bimmer. âHeading home, huh?â he says. âBig day tomorrow?â
âThose files arenât going to enter themselves.â
âRight,â Jordan says. âIt takes a man with integrity.â
âOr something.â
It all suddenly sounds so boring. It all sounds so unfair.
Paige and Haley climb into the BMWâs backseat. Jordan circles around to the driverâs side. Studies Eric over the roof of the car.
âI can take you back to your momâs Benz if you really want,â Jordan says. Thereâs a wicked glint in his eye. âOr we could all have some real fun.â
The way he says it gives Eric a shiver. He flashes back to the boat, Jordanâs tanned skin, his six-pack.
Real fun.
(Yes, please.)
But Eric forces himself to hold his poker face. âWhat do you have in mind?â
Jordanâs grin gets wider. He gestures to his car.
âGet in,â he tells Eric. âItâs easier if we show you.â
70.
âWhere are we going, exactly?â
Theyâve been driving for ten minutes now into an industrial park on the outskirts of Capilano. The streets are quiet; all business is done for the day, and this is a sleepy town after dark anyway, even on a Friday. Most of the real action is in the clubs across the bridge, in the city itself.
Nobody is speaking. Nobodyâs on the roads. Even the radio is turned off. Itâs like driving through a post-apocalyptic dead zone with the volume on mute. Eric plays along until he canât take it anymore.
âUm, guys?â
His voice seems intrusively loud in the silence. Nobody replies. Jordan keeps driving. He reaches an intersection and turns
