guy.â
Lacey twisted the hem of her T-shirt in her hands and was the first to follow Sarah. âLetâs get out of here . That house gives me the creeps.â
The Super Spies sauntered back down the hill and Sarah cast a quick glance over her shoulder. The house seemed to be watching her with evil intent. She shivered even though the day was warm.
Determined strides carried Sarah back down the hill and the rest of the Super Spies trailed behind her. The group reached the drugstore in record time and Sarah pulled open the door, listening for the tiny bell that signaled the owner a customer had entered the shop.
âIâll be out front in a second,â a male voice called from the bowels of the store.
âOkay,â Sarah called back.
After a few seconds a tall, gangly man appeared. âHi, Iâm Hank. How can I help you?â He brushed at the chestnut curls framing his face and his brown eyes crinkled at the corners much like Dottieâs had earlier.
Sarah pulled out her photograph and handed it to him. âHave you seen these people around town?â
Hank pursed his lips as he studied the picture. âI definitely havenât seen the woman, but the man⦠he does look familiar.â He handed the photo back to Sarah.
âDo you remember when you saw him?â Sarah asked in a calm voice, though her heart hammered her chest with a ferocious beat.
Hank shook his head. âNo, I canât. Weâve been so busy around here that I canât keep my head straight. New baby and all.â He gave the group a tired smile. âIs that all, or can I help you with something else?â
Jackie stepped forward. âWhatâs the story with the house up on the hill?â
âYou mean the one at the end of the street?â
âYeah, that one.â Jackie nodded vigorously, sending her curls dancing.
âThatâs the Robinson place.â
âDo you know anything about the family?â Sarah asked, trying to keep the eagerness out of her voice.
âJust that their family has been around town since the beginning.â Hank furrowed his brow. âI think the Robinsons started the logging business around here. Thatâs what kept this town alive.â
âReally?â Jackie prodded.
âYep.â
âDo the Robinsonâs still live there?â Lacey asked.
âOh yeah, that house has been passed down from generation to generation. The Missus passed away a few years ago, leaving Mr. Robinson and his young son. Itâs pretty sad thoughâ¦â
âWhatâs sad?â Sarah interrupted. Her stomach clenched into a tight knot as adrenaline rushed through her veins.
âWell⦠the little boy is real sick. In fact, I donât think thereâs anything more they can do for him.â
âWhat does he have?â
Hank frowned and rubbed his cheek. âI really donât know⦠but Mr. Robinson was devastated. You see that little boy is the last in the line of the Robinson family.â
âHmmmâ¦â Sarah looked at the rest of the Super Spies. She wasnât sure what else to ask and it didnât look like her companions did either. âThanks for all your help.â
âYouâre welcome. You kids have a good day.â
âWe will,â Sarah said before she made her way out the door.
Once out on the street, Sarah glanced around and then motioned for the rest of the Super Spies to huddle around. âDid you hear Hank? He says he thinks heâs seen Dad around town.â
âHow can that be?â Lacey asked with wide, frightened eyes.
âI donât know.â Sarah bit her lip and shook her head.
âWhy havenât they called us?â Laceyâs eyes filled with tears as she fidgeted with the hem of her T-shirt.
âI donât know.â Sarah chewed her thumbnail, eyes locked with her sister.
Laceyâs eyes filled with questions and Sarah
