Collector specified that.â
âThen they probably would have come here. But . . .â Hironee hesitated.
âWhat?â Cindy asked.
âIf they resisted transportation they might have been killed back on Earth.â
Cindyâs lower lip quivered. âOh no. Thatâs probably what happened.â
âNonsense,â Sally said impatiently. âA single Collector couldnât take out Adam and Watch. Iâm sure Watch was able to shoot him with his laser. Then they probably took the transporter device. I bet theyâre on their way here now.â
Hironee stopped welding and glanced up. âI told you, this place is shielded. They couldnât transport here. Theyâd have to come in on a ship, a powerful ship.â
âBut if we escape this camp,â Sally said, âthey would be able to pick us up in the desert.â
âIf you can escape here,â Hironee said. âIf they are coming to your rescue. But those are two big ifs. You canât risk your life on them.â
âI would rather die than be a slave the rest of my life,â Sally said proudly.
âI would rather be home watching TV,â Cindy said.
Hironee cautioned them to be silent. âTeeh is coming,â she said.
The Raster boss was as ugly as his reputation. He looked like a crocodile that had decided to stand upright. His thick tail flapped all over as he strode into the warehouse. He had a long snout and large teeth dripping saliva. He wore silver-colored armor over his chest. But the worst thing about him was that he sported his sunglasses at the end of his snout. For some reason they disturbed the girls more than anything else, possibly because they were so cheap and tacky. He waddled over to them.
âAre you the new slaves?â he asked in a slobbery voice.
âYes, sir,â Cindy said, standing stiffly, no doubt worried about having her skin peeled off and eaten in front of her.
âWe are Sally and Cindy,â Sally said. âI am Sally.â
âI am Cindy,â Cindy said.
âHow come youâre not working?â he demanded.
âI was just showing them how to use the welding gun, sir,â Hironee said.
Teeh was annoyed. âDid I ask you? Was I talking to you?â
âNo, sir,â Hironee said, lowering her head.
âWe just got here,â Sally said.
âI know that,â Teeh said. âWhat do you think? Iâm blind? I know everybody here.â He leaned closer and studied Sally. âWhere are the other two?â
âWhich other two?â Cindy asked.
âYour friends,â Teeh said. âAdam Freeman and Watch. They made wishes as well. I sent the Collector to fetch all four of you. Where are they?â
Cindy shrugged. âWe donât know.â
âI know,â Sally said suddenly.
âWhere?â Teeh asked, losing his patience.
Sally looked around as if they were being spied on. âI canât tell you here. We better talk in your office.â She added, âItâs a long story and the information could put you and your position in danger.â
Teeh frowned, as best a standing crocodile could. âHow can I be in danger?â
Sally leaned closer and spoke in his ear. âOnly I can tell you. I am here to help you.â
âWhy should you, a human, help me?â
âBecause I want to get ahead here,â Sally said. âI donât mind stabbing my own people in the back.â
Teeh stepped back and looked around as well. She had sized him up correctly; he was very paranoid and understood greed and ambition.
âCome with me to my office,â he ordered and turned away.
Hironee looked at Sally with worried eyes as she was led away. âBe careful, Sally.â
âI know what Iâm doing,â Sally whispered in reply. But she looked scared.
