with this in the morning.â
âBut where does the boy stay?â
âHe can stay with me at the hostel.â
âThe terms of the visit donât allow that. Besides, thereâs no room at the hostel. The dormitories are being redecorated. Thereâs accommodation for your staff, thatâs all.â
Laura snapped back. âWhat do you suggest? That he sleeps under a bush?â
âIâm suggesting that he returns on the ferry.â
Victor saw the blaze of anger in Lauraâs eyes. Watch out Mayor Wilkes, sheâs just about to go for your jugular.
The mayor added breezily, âIf that boy doesnât get along with the others then itâs clearly a recipe for disaster if he stays.â
Laura closed in. âAll these children have been through hell. Not just last week, but for every week of their lives. They all need a holiday. I wonât stand by while people I care about are run off the island like two-bit thugs.â
From his Mr-High-and-Mighty stance, Mayor Wilkes huffed. âI merely said that in the interests of harmonyââ
Victor interrupted. âHe can stay at White Cross Farm. Thereâs plenty of room.â
âYou mean, stay with you?â Laura turned that glare on Victor â a glare that reminded him of a lioness ready to attack anything that threatened her cubs.
âWe have rules relating to childrenâs accommodation.â Mayor Wilkes wore a smug expression. âThe boy must return on the ferry.â
Victor smiled. âMore precisely, Iâm suggesting that Jay stops with my sister and her husband. Both have childcare clearance checks. Theyâve experience of fostering children as well.â
Laura still resisted. âI wonât have him staying by himself.â
âThen you stay with us, too. There are spare bedrooms.â He read her expression. Grinning, he added, âThatâs right, although my sister runs the place Iâm the lunatic sibling who they keep chained up in the attic.â
Lou grinned too. âThatâs perfectly true, the man is a lunatic. But Victorâs the kind of lunatic you can trust with your life.â
He put his arm round her shoulders. âThank you, Lou. Iâll take that as a compliment.â He glanced at Mayor Wilkes. âWell?â
âLook, Iâm fine with this if Nurse Parris is. Besides, Iâm late for a meeting.â
Victor nodded, âSay hello to the golf club guys for me.â
Scowling, Mayor Wilkes marched on to the ferry, while gesturing to the crew to cast off straight away.
Victor took in the view of the stars coming out in the sky. âItâs going to be a beautiful night.â He added another holdall to the six he already carried. âLou, Iâll see you in the Three Impostors at nine. First ciderâs on me.â
Chuckling girlishly, she followed her party in the direction of the village.
Laura didnât appear impressed. âSo you can charm Lou.â
âLovely Lou. Iâm sure sheâs an angel in human form.â He paused. âOnly us three left. You can accept my offer to stay at my sisterâs farm, or thereâs always the ferry back to the mainland.â Its motor coughed into life.
Laura scowled. âFor one night only . Iâll sort out a place for Jay tomorrow. The children are just overtired.â
He acknowledged the statement with a nod. âFollow me.â
For the first time the boy spoke. âWhereâs he taking us?â
When Laura smiled her face turned from winter to spring. âTo a farm. Thatâs where weâll be staying.â
Victor led the way along the shoreline path. He dropped off holdalls according to the address labels as he went. Behind him the boy talked quietly to Laura, thinking Victor couldnât hear.
âLaura. Iâm frightened.â
âThereâs nothing to be frightened of. There might be animals at the farm.
