your attention, please,â Kylie said. All eyes turned to the center of the gym and PLCâs enormous display. âIn honor of the Blakely Winter Fest, Peace, Love, and Cupcakes gives you a winter wonderland!â
Herbie flipped a switch on the side of the globe, and the entire dome suddenly filled with swirling powdered sugar that settled delicately on the tops of the cupcakes. The studentsâand Principal Fontinaâoohed and aahed.
âHerbie, youâre a genius,â Kylie whispered to him. âThe powdered sugar is brilliant! Now our cupcakes wonât be soggy!â
âI have my moments,â Herbie said with a wink.
âThank goodness you ditched the whole idea of it snowing indoors,â Lexi said. âThat had disaster written all over it.â
âAbout that,â Herbie added. âI didnât ditch it entirelyâ¦â
He took the mic and faced the audience. âLadies and gentlemen, if you will all turn your attention overheadâ¦â
âOh no, he didnâtâ¦â Lexi said, squeezing Kylieâs hand. âI canât watch!â
Herbie hit a switch on his remote control, but nothing happened. âThatâs funny,â he said. âIt must be jammed.â
â Gracias a Dios ,â Jenna said. âIt doesnât work!â
âYeah, what she said,â Sadie added. âPlease give it up, Herbie. We donât need another flood!â
But Herbie didnât want to give up. He kept flicking the switch on his remote while the students grew restless.
âThe pressurizer must have gotten clogged,â he said. âThis shouldnât be happening. I tried it out, and it worked flawlessly.â
Delaney saw how disappointed he was and took Kylie aside. âThis means a lot to him. Canât we help?â
Kylie looked over and saw how upset their adviser was. âGuys, letâs give Herbie a chance to figure it out. He didnât let us down, and we shouldnât let him down.â
âI have an idea,â Delaney chimed in. âWe need a distraction.â
She grabbed the mic out of Herbieâs hand. âHi, everyone! While we wait for our amazing, one-of-a-kind, awesome display to work, my friends from Peace, Love, and Cupcakes and I would like to entertain you with a song.â
âWe would?â Kylie gasped. âLaney, we donât have a song! And I donât sing!â
Delaney grabbed Lexi, who she knew had a great voice. âYouâre on harmony,â she whispered. âKylie, Jenna, Sadie, you guys are our backup dancers.â
âWhat do I do?â Sadie asked in a panic.
âSway, shimmy, bop,â Delaney suggested. âI dunno. Look like youâre having fun and not panicking!â
It felt good, Delaney thought, to take chargeâpractically presidential. She began to sing: âThereâs no business like snow business like no business I know!â
Lexi improvised the next verse: âEverything about it is so chillyâ¦icy, slushy, slidey, and such fun!â
Then Delaney continued: âThatâs when I stay warm inside my kitchen, start baking cupcakes by the tonâ¦â
Suddenly, something overhead sputtered and crackled. The lights in the gym went off, and everyone was left standing in the dark.
âMr. Dubois!â Principal Fontina shouted. âFix this immediately!â
âOn it!â Herbie said, shining his flashlight and climbing a ladder to check the snow machine heâd mounted on the ceiling. âGimme a sec.â
There was a loud bang , then a plop , then the lights came back on. A pile of snow was now sitting on top of Principal Fontinaâs head and melting down her face.
âOopsie,â Herbie said apologetically. âThat wasnât supposed to happen.â
But before their principal could yell, small white snowflakes began delicately dancing through the air. It was beautifulâ¦and
