have to make anything special for me, Mom.â He put his arm around her and they began walking to the kitchen.
âI didnât. I just happened to have the ingredients in the house.â
âIf you believe that I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you,â Harrison piped in.
âHey, Mr. H.â They hugged. âI guess Mom had you running to the store.â
âYes, but I was happy to do it. You know your mom loves to spoil you.â
âAhem. I am still in the room.â
âWe know, Mom.â He kissed her cheek. âIâm glad I didnât eat breakfast.â He rubbed his stomach.
âNow you know you shouldnât skip breakfast. Itâs the most important meal of the day.â
âI know, Mom. But I was in a hurry this morning.â
âIâll let it go this time.â
Lunch was already on the table when they walked into the dining room. Alicia was tickled to have Kurt home and even more tickled that he had a second and third helping of jambalaya.
Finally full, Kurt pushed his plate away. âI think Iâve had enough.â
âAre you sure, sweetie? I made a ton.â
âSheâs not kidding,â Harrison said as he sipped his soda.
âIâll take some home with me. I know Sally loves Creole-style food.â
Aliciaâs good feeling deflated slightly but she tried to cover with a grin. âOh, sure. How is Sally?â
âSheâs good, Mom.â
âStill working in Garden City?â
âYes, Mom.â Kurt knew that tone all too well. âSheâs still not going back to school.â
âDid I say anything?â She tried to sound innocent.
âYou donât have to, Mom. Iâm your child, remember.â
âI know.â
âSheâs happy working in her firm, and I support her decision, just like she supports my decision to go to grad school.â
Harrison got up to clear the table to escape the line of fire.
âOkay, Kurt, you made your point.â
âThank you. So how are you feeling, Mom?â
âIâm good. I did laps in the pool this morning.â
âGreat. What happened on your last visit to the neurologist?â
Alicia was surprised he knew of her visit. âHarrison!â
âDonât blame him, Mom. Iâm your son. I want to know, and I should know whatâs going on with you.â
âEverything is fine. He started me on Avonex. Itâs only one injection a week as opposed to the others, which were every other day and every day. This fits into my life a little better.â
He winced. âYou have to give yourself a shot? Are you okay with that?â
âYes. The nurse showed me how to do it.â
âAre there any side effects?â
âThey say I might have flu-like symptoms for a couple of days, but so far Iâve been fine.â
âWhat about stress and working too much?â
âGood grief, Kurt, are you asking questions or interrogating me?â
âI want to know. Did he tell you to take it easy?â
Kurt knew his mother was a workaholic.
âIâm on hiatus for the next eight weeks. I promise Iâll relax.â
âAnd let Taylor Dawes do her job as managing editor of your magazine, right?â
âOf course.â She crossed her fingers under the table.
âDid you hear that, Mr. H?â
âYes, I did.â
âI have a witness and Iâm going to hold you to that.â
âFine,â she grumbled.
âI want you to relax and have some fun, Mom. Maybe even go out on a date.â
âA date?â
âYes, Mom. In case you donât remember, a date is where a man asks you out and you go and have a good time together.â
âDonât be a smart ass. I know what a date is.â
âWhenâs the last time you went on a date?â
âWhat kind of question is that to ask your mother?â
âItâs a fair question.
