Iâm not a kid anymore, Mom, and you need to date.â
âNo, dear child of mine. I need to eat, drink water and breathe. I donât think dating qualifies as a need.â
âYouâre avoiding the question.â He was getting impatient.
âThatâs because the answer is she hasnât been on a date, period,â Harrison chimed in.
âWere we talking to you, Harrison?â
âNo, but itâs the truth.â
âNow thatâs a shame. Youâre still a young woman.â
Alicia grinned. âListen to how cute you are.â She got up and kissed him on the cheek. âI got my Mr. Darcy when I married your dad.â
âI know, Mom, but Iâm sure Dad would want you to find someone and be happy.â
âI am happy. I was lucky enough to marry the love of my life, and even though heâs gone I can still see him in you. What more could I want or need?â
âGame, set and match, Mom. How am I supposed to answer that?â He looked down at his cell phone. âI have a text here from Sally. Listen, Mom, I think my phone is about to die. Can I use yours to see whatâs happening?â
âSure.â
âThanks.â He got up and left the room.
Harrison waited until it was clear. âWhat kind of BS are you handing your son?â
âExcuse me?â
âYou know what I mean. Why donât you tell him the real reason youâre not dating?â
âI just did.â
âWe both know thatâs not the whole reason.â
âLeave it alone, Harrison.â
âWhy? Why are you so scared?â
âWhat am I supposed to tell him? Should I tell him Iâm scared to date because Iâm diseased?â
âDonât say that.â
âItâs the truth. I donât want the people who work with me to know I have MS. How can I possibly start dating?â
âMartha had MS, too, and I didnât run away. I loved her completely, no matter what.â
âI know. But you were already together when she was diagnosed. I mean, whatâs the proper etiquette on when to tell someone you have a chronic disease with no cure? Is it the third date or the fifth date? Frankly, Iâd rather not call Emily Post. Iâll take a pass.â
âYouâre taking a pass on life, you know.â
Kurt Jr. walked back in.
âEverything okay, honey?â
âYes.â He looked at Harrison and Alicia. âDid something happen while I was on the phone?â
âNo. Everything is fine,â Alicia lied.
The doorbell rang.
âWere you expecting anyone else today?â Harrison asked as he headed for the door.
âNo.â
A minute later Lauren walked in.
âHey, Auntie Lauren. How are you?â Kurt got up and hugged her.
âKurt, itâs good to see you.â She kissed his cheek. âLet me look at you.â She smiled. âYouâre still as handsome as ever.â
âOh, Auntie, you have to say that, youâre my godmother.â
âNo, I donât. It just happens to be the truth.â
âWhat brings you over today? I wasnât expecting to see you,â Alicia said.
âCanât I just pop by? Do I need a reason to see my best friend?â She sat down.
âOf course you donât need a reason. Except you look like you just flew out of your house and past all mirrors.â
âExcuse me? Are you saying Iâm a mess?â
âNo, you look fine.â She came closer. âBut there is something up. Are you hung over?â
Lauren seemed shocked Alicia was so dead on, but she tried to play it off. âI may have had one too many martinis, but Iâm fine.â
Lauren could see from the expression on Aliciaâs face that she wasnât buying it.
âCan I talk to you in my office, Lauren?â She stood up.
âWhy?â
âOkay. Would you rather I continue in front of Harrison and
