voice strained.
They nodded.
âWeâre so sorry,â Miriam offered. What could she say to this â¦
killer?
Stop it,
she told herself.
You have no proof. So just stop.
âMeiâs really wrecked,â Noah said. âI am, too. I came to school to get her work for the rest of the week.â
He turned his eyes to Holly.
Miriam swore she saw her friend shrink three inches.
âI saw you at the game Saturday,â he said.
Holly blinked. âYou did?â
âYeah. In the parking lot. You were on your way to your car.â
Miriamâs eyes were locked on Noahâs hands.
Could those be the hands of a killer? Could they have pushed Mrs. Kamata down the stairs?
âI gotta go,â Noah said, his eyes regaining their far-off glaze. âIâll tell Mei youâre sorry about her mom.â
Miriam gulped.
âThanks,â Holly mumbled. âWeâweâll call Mei later.â
Noah moved off, down the hall and out of sight.
They all collapsed against the lockers. Miriam wrapped her arms around herself, feeling the gooseflesh under her fingertips.
Holly whirled on her.
âDo you believe me now?â
Miriam stared at her best friend. She didnât know what to think.
âDid you hear him?â Holly cried. âDid you hear what he said about Saturday night?â
âHolly â¦â
âDid you see the way he looked at me?â
Miriam pictured Noahâs cold eyes.
âThey
saw
me, Miriam! They know I heard them plotting to kill Meiâs mom,â Hollyâs voice was shrill.
âThey knowâand now theyâre going to kill me, too!â
chapter 11
âD onât be ridiculous,â Ruth said. âNoah is just upset. He wasnât threatening you.â
âNo,â Holly moaned, shaking her head. âI could see it in his eyes. He
knows.â
âHolly,â Miriam said. âThink about what youâre saying. Youâre talking about murder.â
âI
know.
Donât you think I know that?â Hollyâs voice came out shrill and high.
âHolly!â Miriam pleaded. âNoah didnât mean anything by what he said. He didnât kill anybody. He came over here to tell us about Meiâs mom.â
âBe careful,â Ruth warned. âIf you spread false rumors about them, theyâll be hurt. And furious. You donât really believe they would kill someone.â
âHow can I
not
believe it, Ruth?â Holly shrieked.âYou werenât there. You didnât hear how serious Noah was.â
âRuth is right,â Miriam said. âIf you spread this rumor, Mei and Noah would be destroyed. Everyone will think theyâre guilty just because you accused them.â
âWhat if they
are
guilty?â Holly insisted.
Miriam shrugged. âThen theyâll get caught. But not because of us. You canât say anything, Holly. You just canât.â
Holly heaved a sigh. âOkay. I wonât say anything.â
âPromise?â
âI promise.â
Miriam turned to Ruth. Ruth raised her eyebrows. âDonât look at me like that.
I
donât think they did it. Hollyâs crazy.â
âThanks, Ruth,â Holly murmured. âThanks for the support.â
âIâm realistic,â she replied.
âWe all agree?â Miriam asked. âNo one spreads nasty rumors?â
Ruth and Holly nodded, but the air remained tense. Miriam could feel the tension pouring from Holly.
Studying her best friend, Miriam knew Holly had no doubt that Mei and Noah were murderers. Holly thought they were coming for her next. She believed it down to her bones.
The worst part about it, Miriam thought, is that Iâm not completely sure Holly is wrong.
Mei couldnât do something like that, she insisted to herself. Holly
is
wrong.
Miriam thought about Mei sitting at home, in shock, grieving, dealing with her motherâs sudden
