her mouth, but couldnât speak.
Dead.
She couldnât believe it.
Theyâd just been
joking
about it!
Wait!
Miriam thought suddenly, her mind racing. This is only gossip! Itâs something Holly heard. It didnât really happen.
Did it?
Miriam stared at her friend. Holly hadnât moved. Her eyes were frozen wide and she absently bit her bottom lip. Her color was bleach-white.
âShe did it, Miriam,â Holly whispered. âMei killed her mother.â
âNo!â Miriam choked out. She didnât want to believe it. âMei could never do that. Never.â
âThen explain what happened,â Holly growled. âHow did her mother die?â
Miriam tried to make herself think. âI donât
know!
Maybe she had an accident. People fall down the stairs all the time.â
âYou donât really believe that, do you?â Ruth demanded.
Miriam had to turn away. She didnât know what she believed.
âOf course she doesnât!â Holly cried. âShe knows what we all know. That Mei or Noah pushed Meiâs mother.â
âItâs crazy,â Miriam insisted. âI know Mei! She wouldnât do it! No way!â
âYeah, but you know Noah,â Ruth said pointedly.
Miriam didnât reply. She hadnât thought about Noah. She had no idea what he would do for Mei.
He hung out with a bad crowd. Miriam knew he sometimes drank, and he bragged about doing dangerous things.
But was he capable of murder?
âCome on,â Miriam said. âPeople donât kill their parents just because they canât date each other!â
âKeep your voice down!â Holly snapped. âDo you want the whole school to hear?â
âWhat should we do?â Miriam asked.
Holly nervously tugged at her blue scarf. âI think we should go to the police.â
âNo!â Miriam protested.
If they told the police, it would be like admitting that she thought Mei had murdered her mother. Miriam didnât want to believe that.
Holly turned to Ruth. âHelp me convince her, Ruth. You know Mei did it.â
Miriam saw Ruthâs eyes grow icy. She had been quiet since hearing Hollyâs news, perhaps shocked into silence, Miriam thought. News of a dead parent probably made Ruth think of her fatherâs death.
âAre you okay?â Miriam asked her friend.
âYeah,â Ruth replied, expressionless. âI donât know what to believe. Why would anyone want to watch their parent die?â
No one replied. Miriam couldnât imagine herself even
considering
killing her parents.
The bell for homeroom exploded in Miriamâs ears, making her jump nearly out of her skin.
âBefore we go,â Holly insisted, âI have to know what weâre doing!â
âNothing,â Miriam replied. âWe donât have to do a thing.â
Holly gaped at her. âAre you kidding?â
âHolly,â Ruth began.
âWe have toââ
âHolly.â
Ruth yanked her sleeve.
âWhat?â Holly growled, her teeth clenched.
âItâs Noah,â Ruth replied, gazing over Hollyâs shoulder.
Miriam spun around. She drew in a quick breath.
Noah Brennan was walking toward them!
âOh, no,â Holly whispered.
Noah looked frightening. So tired, his hair uncombed and hanging in his face. His eyes red-rimmed and bloodshot.
âWhat do we do?â Holly whispered.
âDonât say a word,â Miriam replied. âHe doesnât know you overheard them in the parking lot.â
âSo you
do
believe they did it,â Ruth muttered.
Miriam ignored her.
Noahâs eyes leveled on the three of them as he approached. His eyes were hard and cold.
Miriam shivered.
Noah stopped in front of them. He rubbed his unshaven chin as if sizing them up.
âNoah?â Holly asked cautiously.
âI guess you heard about Meiâs mom,â he murmured, his
