audience at the battle and shook my head. “I don’t believe that.”
“And why not?”
“You saw all those girls at the battle. They looked like they were ready to pounce on him.”
“Kinda like the way you were looking at him?” she teased.
“I wasn’t looking at him like that!” It was a lie and we both knew it, but I was already embarrassed enough as it was…I was not about to admit to something so humiliating. Unfortunately, Anna was not about to drop it.
“Sure you were. You were totally undressing Mr. Amaaazing with your eyes.”
I blushed. “You’re so full of it.”
“I’m only joshing with you.” Her voice trailed off and her eyes darkened. “Take my advice, don’t even give into this little crush you have on him. It’s only going to end in crushing disappointment.”
“Nice pun.” Feeling a bit miffed, I shot back, “You don’t think I can land a guy like him?”
“No.” She shook her head. Once again the pangs of high school humiliation stung my core. Before I could get too worked up, Anna quickly added, “I know you won’t land a guy like him. Nobody can. Like I said, he’s married to dance. And guys like him don’t cheat.”
Chapter 8
Present
“E, did you try using your phone again?” It was the first thing Jacob had said to me in over an hour. Though I was still angry with him, I couldn’t help the slight skip of my heart from hearing my name on his lips.
“I told you, nobody’s answering. They probably think I’m calling them about work.” I sighed, feeling completely helpless. Who would have thought that years ago I would have paid someone to lock me in a room with Mr. Spinja. Now all I wanted to do was break free from my prison. I turned to find him still looking out the window. For some reason, the sight of him staring out into the night sky annoyed me. “You know this is all your fault, right?”
He turned around with an incredulous look on his face. “My fault? How is our getting locked in here my fault?”
I tapped the toe of my pumps against the hardwood floor. “Let’s see, if you weren’t being such a jerk I wouldn’t have run in here in the first place.”
“And if you weren’t acting like such an immature brat I wouldn’t have had to follow you up here. Seriously, you’re twenty-three years old. Act like it for once.”
I couldn’t even dignify his insult with a response. Instead, I sat down at my desk and turned on my computer.
Throwing me a sneer, he grunted. “What are you doing now?”
“If I’m stuck in here with some imbecile, I might as well get some work done.”
He snorted. “Must be nice to have a job.”
I slammed the top of my briefcase shut in exasperation. “Jacob, don’t start. That’s not fair and you know it.”
“You sure about that?” He stomped his way over to me and pointed at the wall clock. “Look at the time, E! Where would I be at this very moment if you hadn’t gone and fucked things up for me?”
“I didn’t mess anything up for you! I saved you!”
“You’re still sticking to that story? You know as well as I do that it’s pure BS.”
“Fuck you.”
“Funny, that’s what you wanted to do last night, right? And what you wanted to do—”
Without waiting for him to finish, I stood up abruptly, knocking my chair over. Jacob jumped back, looking a bit startled. I walked over to the door and began to pound at it with the side of my fist. I knew it was useless and that the custodians had long gone, but I didn’t care. I needed to get out of the room in order to save any shred of my sanity. “Help!”
Chapter 9
Past
It’s funny how you can expect a certain event in your life to be self-defining and somewhat momentous only to find it has no lasting effects at all. For me it was the b-boy battle. After thrusting myself into the middle of something so out of my element, there was a part of me that
