up and marched right over to D.L. â That is Max and donât ever speak about him in that tone again. Because I promise, if you do, we are so done.â
âWhatâs with you?â he asked, reaching for her hand. âSince when are you champion of the charity cases?â
Okay, this was weird. Why wasnât D.L. on the Max bandwagon?
I wasnât the only one wondering . . .
âWhat did I just tell you?â Courtney yanked her hand away from him. âQuit being so mean. Why canât you be more like Max?â She stomped out of the room with D.L. following close behind.
âWhoa,â Gabi said.
I had to second that. Courtney just dissed the hot school bad boyâher very own boyfriendâto stand up for the freaky school dork. I really did use my powers for good.
Max stood up and walked right past us.
âWait up,â I called out to him.
He stopped, but he wouldnât look at me. Just at his feet.
Okay. I wasnât looking for a âthank youâ or anything like that. After all, Max had no idea that I was responsible for his fabulous new reputation. But I would have liked to have seen a smile. A little bounce in his step. Something to prove using my devil powers was worth it. That it had meaning. But nope. Max looked gloomier than ever.
âWhatâs wrong?â Gabi asked.
âEverything,â he muttered.
âEverything?â I repeated after him. âWhat do you mean everything? Everyone is crazy about you. Itâs like the perfect day.â
âYeah,â he said, kicking his foot over a scuff mark in the floor. âJust perfect. Now the whole school is out to get me.â
âWhat are you talking about?â I asked. This was crazy. Was he living in some parallel universe? Our classmates were treating him like a superhero. Gabiâs wish made sure of that.
âYouâve seen it. Theyâre all pretending to like me. Itâs a big set-up. Theyâre planning something. Iâll probably wind up taped to my locker at the end of the day if Iâm lucky. Itâs probably much worse than that. Like this whole president thing. Itâs some elaborate scheme.â
âNo,â I said. âMax, they just like you.â
âRight.â His foot moved like crazy over the floor. âAll of a sudden, just like that,â he said, snapping his fingers, âthey start liking me. No way.â
I chewed on my nails. This was not what I imagined.
âIt could happen,â Gabi said, nodding wildly.
Max gave her a weak smile. âNo it couldnât. Whatâs worse, even people like Cole and Reid are in on it. It wasnât like we were friends, but at least they never tried to torture me before. Now theyâre helping Courtney and everyone set me up.â
âCole wouldnât do that,â I protested.
âThen why all of a sudden did he offer to help me get ready for basketball tryouts? He barely ever speaks to me. Now he wants to be my friend? Heâs probably in charge of luring me somewhere.â
âItâs not like that, Max. Itâsââ I cut myself off.
âItâs what?â
What could I say? âItâs because of me and my devil powersâ? That âI made everyone want to be friends with youâ? So I just told him that I didnât know.
Max didnât say anything else. He just walked out of class.
âThis is awful,â I said to Gabi. My nails were now nonexistent.
âItâs not that bad,â she said. âEventually heâll realize everyoneâs sincere, and heâll be happy.â
Eventually? I didnât want eventually. âBut now he feels worse about himself. And I caused that.â
âItâll all work out,â Gabi said. âNow come on, letâs go. Maybe weâll get to see Marc on the way to class!â
How could she think about boys when Maxâs future was at stake? âGabi,
