“You are mine, Kristen. Mine. This is not the place for you. You need to quit this job!” I felt like crushing myself deep into his chest, feeling his powerful, strong arms wrapped around me. My fingertips wanted nothing more than to explore his beefy, hard body and cover him with soft, buttery kisses. But the logical part of me knew that was wrong. Yes, Markus was an alpha, but he could not control me and he should not want to. I tensed against his warm chest before he finally pulled away.
We walked the rest of the way in silence. As we neared Beelines, I could not control my emotions anymore.
“This is not happening Markus. You are not my boss. You don’t own me!”
“I need to run,” Markus said, ignoring my words. “Do you want to come?”
There was nothing I wanted more than to run … to release the tension of the past few days, feel the wind ruffling my fur, and breathe in the fresh clean air. But, I knew what running did to me. It heightened my sexual desire, my powerful longing for my mate. Let’s face it; I knew that running in my wolf made me horny as hell. If I ran, I might not be able to control my deep craving for Markus. I would succumb to his luscious lips, his rippling abs and his huge cock—just the thought of his hard erection sent a ripple of pleasure throughout my body. Even when I was annoyed or mad at Markus, I could still feel that tingling in my loins for him.
But no, not tonight. I shoved my burning desires aside. Caleb had taught his boys to dominate. In many ways I couldn’t blame him. Life at Camp Vickers could turn brutal at any time. The boys, Markus and Dorian had to be prepared to take control and make decisions quickly. But Markus also needed to learn that it was different with a mate. He needed to learn that we were in this together. We had a partnership.
When we walked into the motel room, I could see the newspaper spread out over the kitchen table. Markus had obviously gone over the classifieds again, hoping to find something in the job section; something he’d missed earlier. I loved that he was persistent; that he wanted to provide. I felt myself starting to soften, but I dug down, finding a new resolve. If this wereman and I were to have any sort of bright future together, we needed to base it on respect and love—not dominance and control. Yes, Markus did teach me a thing or two about finding my deep womanliness as a she-wolf. But, now I had to teach him how to pull back the “I am in charge” button.
And the crazy thing was, Markus was over his initial anger now. He still wanted me to quit the job, but for the most part he was back to his usual self. I wasn’t having it. There was no way I would put up with his anger each time he didn’t like something I did.
“Come on babe, run with me,” he whined sexily. “Then we’ll come back here and…” his voice trailed off as he licked my neck, the wet smoothness sending a little buzz of delight through my body.”
This hunky man was hard to resist, and for a moment I wavered. But my resolve returned.
“I’m going to take a shower, watch some TV and then I am turning in. It’s been a long day. We will talk in the morning when we both have cooled down.”
I turned my back to him and walked to the bathroom. A long, hot shower would help release the tension from my shoulders and erase the grimy pizzeria smell: a combination of wood burning pizza and the occasional slosh of beer that slapped on my shirt as I served.
I turned on the faucets and stepped into the shower. The steamy water felt so good running down my back and over my shoulders. I grabbed a cake of soap and began massaging the creamy bar into my skin.
As I washed myself, my back to the door, I could hear Markus coming into the bathroom, probably to take a leak before he went running. As he finished up, I caught a brief reflection of him in the chrome. I quickly realized he didn’t know I knew he was there, and I decided to continue the ruse. Why
