a bit further and find out what had brought her there, but she was relieved that he didn’t, because it was the last thing that she wanted to discuss.

It didn’t take long for the pair to arrive at The Dark Angels auto repair shop. Geech guided the tow truck inside of the garage slowly, and when he came to a stop, he and Lily hopped out. Lily looked around and eyed several of the mechanics, who had all stopped what they were doing to check her out. Huge, flirtatious smiles spread across all of their faces, and she felt so overexposed and self-conscious amidst their invading stares. But Geech had come around to her side of the truck and put his arm around her immediately; protecting her while silently sending a message to the men that she was off limits. Lily looked up at Geech and gazed into his eyes, grateful that he had once again come to her rescue.

“Come on, I’ll take you into the waiting area, then I’ll talk to the guys about your car and have them check it out and see what’s going on.”

“Thank you,” Lily replied quietly, feeling so appreciative of Geech and his helpfulness. When he opened the door to the small waiting area, Lily walked inside and sat down on the couch while he turned on the television.

“We don’t have much around here to eat,” he told her, “But I can grab you a can of Diet Coke and bag of potato chips from the vending machine to tide you over we figure out what’s going on with the car, then get you some dinner.”

“A Diet Coke and bag of chips sound perfect,” Lily said, unable to stop her roaming eyes from traveling all over Geech’s sexy body. And the kinder and more helpful he was to her, the more attracted she felt toward him. But Lily had to stop herself before she started to fall too hard. She had already gotten herself into enough trouble when it came to men, and she had a past that was rushing to catch up to her at any given moment. So the last thing that she needed was to get involved with yet another guy who appeared to have some sort of dark past lurking behind him as well.

Geech walked out of the waiting area and returned a few minutes later with the can of soda and bag of chips. Lily was starving and so thirsty because she hadn’t eaten or drank anything for hours. So she tore into the chips ravenously and guzzled the soda down in practically three gulps. Geech watched her intently, then laughed when she tossed the empty can and bag into the garbage can.

“Wow, you must have really been hungry and thirsty,” he said jokingly.

“I was,” Lily sighed as she too laughed at herself and brushed the crumbs off of her lap. “I hadn’t had a drink or anything to eat since early this afternoon.”

“So you must be starving,” Geech said, his eyes full of care as well as attraction as he stared at Lily intensely.

“I am, actually,” she admitted. “But hopefully my car will be ready soon and I can get to my sister’s place. I’m sure she has dinner cooking as we speak.”

Geech turned around and looked out at the floor of the shop, watching as the mechanics looked underneath the hood. “I hate to tell you this, but when I went out to grab your snacks, the guys told me that they doubt it if they can fix your car tonight. You blew the engine, and they may have to search around to find a replacement for you. There’s no way we can get that done tonight.”

“Oh no ,” Lily moaned as she closed her eyes and covered her face. She felt a bolt of sick nervousness hit the pit of her stomach at the thought of being in a foreign place alone overnight. She had felt vulnerable and as though she was in danger for months now, and all she wanted was to get to a safe place around people who would love and protect her so that she could finally breathe easy and relax. “I really need to get out of here tonight,” she continued as she looked back up at Geech desperately. “And I need my car. I can’t afford to
