anti-inflammatories will fix me right up.â
She scowled, glanced from the burning store and back. âI canât leave you here. You have no idea what theyâre capable of.â
âActually I do. Iâve had my own encounters with the Mendukati.â
She gave a harsh laugh. âWell then, you know exactly how dangerous they are, especially to a Seer. I know they wonât kill me . Canât say the same for you.â
âNo, they wonât kill you. They need you. Thereâs a war on, Faith, and youâre the key to it.â
âIs that why youâre here? To convince me to help the Seers?â She shook her head, holding up her hands. âNo way, pal. Not taking sides. I want no part of this. I just want to be left alone.â
She was going to bolt. He could sense it. âDo you think thatâs reasonable?â
âTo not want any part of a war?â
âNo, to think theyâll actually leave you out of it.â
She pressed her lips together. âThey canât force me to do anything.â
âCanât they?â He glanced back at the store. âThat was just a building. What if they come after people next? What if they threaten Ben unless you do what they want?â Her expression didnât change, but he knew heâd touched a nerve. He pressed on. âWe can protect both of you.â
âOh, yeah? How do you propose to do that?â She propped a hand on her hip and tilted her chin in challenge. âCan Seers make me invisible?â
âOf course not. But we can take you someplace where the Mendukati canât get to you.â
âI doubt anyplace like that exists.â
âIt does now. Look, weâve seen what they can do, and weâve upped our security to deal with it.â When she said nothing, he added, âWe can even pay you, if thatâs what it takes. Itâs that important.â
She frowned, but he could tell heâd caught her interest. âPay me? How much?â
âEnough to disappear, create a new identity. Get off the Mendukatiâs radar.â
âReally. And what would I have to do toââ
A charcoal gray compact skidded to a halt at the end of the alley.
Faith backed away. âWhoâs that?â
He started toward the vehicle. âOur ride.â
The passengerâs side window rolled down, and Ben stuck his head out, relief evident on his face as he waved them closer. âFaith! Come on!â
Darius felt the anxiety drain from her at the sight of her father-in-law. Ben hopped out of the car and opened the back door, gesturing to Faith.
She glanced at Darius. âWeâre not done talking, Seer.â
He nodded, and she ran to the car and climbed into the backseat. Ben slid in beside her. Darius followed more slowly and eased himself and his cane into the passengerâs side.
âDid you take him out?â he said to Gray.
âBastard got away, but I got a couple of shots in.â
Darius slammed the door. âGet us out of here.â
âYour wish is my command.â Gray hit the gas.
*Â Â Â *Â Â Â *
âOkay, Seer. Start talking.â Faith reached for Benâs hand, a comfort she hadnât realized she craved until he twined his fingers with hers.
Darius met her gaze in the rearview mirror. âLike I told you, my name is Darius Montana. This is Adrian Gray. My family recently acquired one of the Stones of Ekhia.â
Her heart skipped into triple time at his words, and she forced herself to breathe in and out slowly for a moment until her pulse calmed. Corinne had said something about finding a stone. Could he really have one of the three sacred stones that were the legendary power source of Atlantis? All but one had been missing for centuries.
But if it were the real deal â¦
âAre you kidding?â She gave a shrug to hide her excitement. âEvery couple of years some wacko comes
